The basics

Founded by the Carthaginians—when it was better known by its Moorish name of Medina Minurqa—this picturesque Balearic city was almost destroyed after a Turkish invasion in 1558. Thankfully, most of it was rebuilt in the 17th century in the Italian style, before becoming the island’s capital until the 18th century.

Today, travelers are invited to explore Ciutadella with visits to the old town, Plaça des Born—the town’s main square that’s lined with 18th-century palaces—and to City Hall, where you can see remnants of the town’s old wall. In the evenings, you can take in the beautiful Mediterranean sunset before visiting one of the city’s cafés or bars.

How to get there

Ciutadella’s old town is relatively accessible by bus or car from all parts of the island. If you're coming from Menorca Airport, it's about a 40-minute drive west following the Me-1. There are also regularly scheduled buses/shuttles if you're not renting a car.

When to get there

For the warmest weather, visit the island during the summer (May to August) and early to mid-fall (September to October). Or to catch a few of its festivals, head to Ciutadella in mid-January for La Processó dels Tres Tocs, or toward the end of June for the celebration of Sant Joan, the town’s patron saint. Both festivals feature dancing, parades, and pomada—a tangy and refreshing concoction of lemonade and gin.

Cala Morell Necropolis Caves

Though known for its clear, cobalt blue waters and rocky beach, Cala Morell is also home to one of the most important archeological sites on the entire island: Cala Morell Necropolis Caves. This ancient outdoor cave complex consists of 14 caves dug into the cliffside, which date all the way back to the Bronze Age—well worth a visit if you're interested in history and natural wonders.
