The basics

Northeastern New South Wales’ Nightcap National Park is part of the extraordinary Gondwanaland rainforest that stretches across northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. It’s the most extensive area of subtropical rainforest anywhere in the world and a treat for nature and wildlife enthusiasts, regardless of activity level. Shorter trails can be walked in about 30 minutes, while the 11-mile (18–kilometer) return Goorgana hike takes all day.

Most travelers visit independently while visiting the Byron Bay Hinterland area. You can also take guided walks in the park or join night tours of the hinterland (including Nightcap) to see glowworms and other creatures of the night.

How to get there

Nightcap National Park is in northern New South Wales, north of Lismore and north-west of Byron Bay. It’s about an hour’s drive from either town. Most travelers visit independently and self-drive to the park. There are three entry points—Gibbergunyah Range Road, Newton Drive, and Terania Creek Road. Most of the access roads are unsealed, so take care when driving.

When to get there

Winter (June–August) and early spring (September) are the best times to visit the park for outdoor activities, as the weather is coolest then—but still quite warm in this northern part of New South Wales. September is the driest month. Summers can be sweltering and humid, and February is the wettest month, which may be uncomfortable, but it’s also good for checking out the waterfalls.

Have a nightcap while camping near Nightcap

While there aren’t any overnight camping facilities in Nightcap National Park itself, travelers wanting to stay overnight can set up camp at the Rummery Park campground. This is in the Whian Whian State Conservation Area, which connects to Nightcap to its south. There are 18 sites and basic facilities, including toilets and picnic tables, but you must bring your own drinking water and firewood.
