The basics

Most visitors arrive at the private harbor of Kewalo Basin with a pre-booked tour for snorkeling, an underwater submersible, or a fishing adventure. Individual tour companies and boat operators dock at this harbor about a mile west along the coast from Waikiki. Harbor-side information booths and ticket sales for regularly departing trips will also be found here. Get a fresh perspective away from the beaches of Waikiki and out into the big blue with a tour departing from Kewalo Basin.

Things to know before you go

  • A range of activities, from family-friendly sightseeing cruises to adrenaline-pumping parasailing adventures, are available here.

  • Some tours include shuttle transportation from your hotel, while others do not; read the fine print to find one that best suits your situation.

  • Look elsewhere in Oahu for beach access.

  • Remember to bring a hat and sunscreen, as some boats offer little to no cover from the sun.

When to get there

Visitors traveling to Oahu wishing to see humpback whales should know this is a seasonal offering; whale excursions are available from December through May. The most popular time of year to visit Oahu is the summer months when schools are closed. Visitors who would rather avoid the crowds often plan trips during the spring and fall shoulder seasons. This strategy can coincide with more affordable airfare, too.

See green sea turtles

In addition to whale watching, one of the most popular water-based wildlife adventures in Oahu is the chance to see green sea turtles up close. Choose between tour options like glass-bottom boat cruises or get in the water during snorkeling adventures to swim alongside these magnificent creatures.
