Because of its important role in Sarajevo’s history and diverse religious representation, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is one of the main attractions in the Old Town of Sarajevo. It’s a regular stop on Saravejo walking tours, though many only visit its courtyard. A complete visit inside and out of the mosque shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes, after which you can follow with a visit to the nearby Gazi Husrev-beg's Museum to learn more about the mosque and the man it was named after.
As a place of worship, the mosque does have a dress code, so it’s important to dress conservatively—no bare knees or shoulders, and women require a headscarf.
There is a small admission fee to go inside the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque.
You need remove your shoes and store them on the shelves before entering the mosque.
Located in the Old Town of Sarajevo just off the Bascarsija Bazaar, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is easy to reach on foot. When coming from outside the old town area, hop on the number 3 tram to either the Baščaršija or the Latin Bridge tram stops and then walk the remaining short distance.
Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is open daily but has two breaks during its opening hours for the call to prayer—one at midday and one in the mid-afternoon. It’s best to avoid visiting around these times if you’re not there to pray, even just to see its courtyards, as the mosque is generally very busy then with people praying.
While the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is the largest historic mosque in Sarajevo, it’s not the only mosque found in the city’s Old Town. Two streets from the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is the Ferhadija Mosque, a smaller 16th-century mosque with a leafy cemetery. Over by the Bascarsija Bazaar, there is the Baščaršija Mosque, which is also from the 16th century and delights visitors with its rose garden.
