Sarajevo Tunnel (Tunel Spasa)

Dagligen: 9–16
Donji Kotorac 34, Sarajevo, 71000

The basics

Holes from snipers’ bullets scar the entrance to the half-mile (1-kilometer) Sarajevo Tunnel, an artifact of the siege that stretched from 1992 to 1995. A portion of the tunnel is open to visitors, along with an adjacent home that contains the tunnel museum. The Sarajevo Tunnel is included on many tours of Sarajevo; since many tour guides in Sarajevo are siege survivors, guided experiences here can be particularly moving.

How to get there

The Sarajevo Tunnel is located 6 miles (10 kilometers) southwest of the city center, near Sarajevo International Airport. It’s not easy to reach via public transit, so most visitors opt for a tour or hire a cab for the 20-minute ride from downtown. If you’re coming by cab, plan to ask the driver to wait while you visit the Sarajevo Tunnel.

From April through October, the Sarajevo Tunnel is open from morning until late afternoon. Opening hours are morning until mid-afternoon from November through May. While you can enter up to 30 minutes before closing, it’s worth leaving a bit more time, as most people take around an hour to explore the tunnel and small museum.

To get a taste of daily life in Sarajevo during the siege, visit the War Childhood Museum and Sniper Alley, a transport corridor pocked by years of shooting. The harrowing Galerija 11/07/95 documents the Srebrenica massacre, while the Museum Of Crimes Against Humanity And Genocide 1992-1995 takes a broader took at the period’s atrocities.
