The basics

A popular day trip from Barcelona, Les Ferreres Aqueduct (Aqüeducte de les Ferreres) is a short drive from Tarragona. It's best visited as part of a tour that stops at the nearby seaside town of Sitges. One of the region’s most prized archaeological sites, this Roman aqueduct is believed to have been built between 27 BC and 14 AD. It is also known as the Devil’s Bridge, based on the legend that it was built by the Devil himself.

Things to know before you go

  • Whether you take on one of the hiking and biking trails that crisscross the surrounding hills or stroll along the top, you’ll be doing a bit of walking at the aqueduct. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

  • The aqueduct is a photographer’s dream, rising against the blue sky from below or offering 360° views from the walkway along the top.

  • The low walls lining the upper walkway can be easily scaled by children so keep your eye on younger travelers to prevent falls.

  • Le Ferreres Aqueduct is part of an eco-historic park that also offers guided tours and holds cultural events and concerts. There is a restaurant and restrooms inside the park.

  • Visitors using wheelchairs can approach the bottom of the aqueduct to admire it from below, but the path to the top and the upper walkway are not accessible.

Highlights of the Tarragona Pont del Diable Eco-Historic Park

The ancient ruins of the Les Ferreres Aqueduct, a fragment of what was once a much longer conduit, are part of an eco-historic park. Highlights include the Jardins Romantics, a planned garden created at the beginning of the 20th century; hiking or biking the network of trails that lead deeper into the landscape; or relaxing with a snack or meal at the Casa del Guardia restaurant, once used to house the garden’s guards.
