The Sigmund Freud Museum is outside of the historical center of Vienna, making it easy to add it to your city sightseeing. Most travelers find one to two hours is enough time to visit without feeling rushed. The museum may be a stop on walking tours that focus on famous Viennese figures, but you usually will want to come back on your own to visit inside. Some sightseeing passes may offer discounted entry to the museum.

The Sigmund Freud Museum is in Alsergrund, Vienna’s 9th District, northwest of the city’s historical center. Walking may be an option if you’re coming from the city center, but taking public transport is usually quicker. Ride the No. 1 or D trams to Schlickgasse, travel on the U4 metro to Roßauer Lände, and walk the remaining 10 minutes to the museum.
You can visit the Sigmund Freud Museum every day of the week except Tuesdays and public holidays. Expect the museum to be busy in July and August, as well as in the lead-up to Christmas, when Vienna receives a lot of tourists. Visit in spring or fall for a better chance to experience the museum with fewer people.
Sigmund Freud lived much of his life in Vienna, so the museum isn’t the only place in the city with ties to the doctor. He studied at the University of Vienna, which you can visit, and frequented several classic coffeehouses in the city, particularly Café Landtmann and Café Central. Over on the slopes of Kahlenberg at Bellevue Wiese, you’ll find a plaque quoting him at one of his favorite spots.
