Fantastisk turné!!

It was awful. Couldn’t wait to leave. Don’t go. It romanticizes poverty and dirtiness of slums which is not representative of the city. No native of India or Mumbai would ever recommend going. It was not enjoyable

Must Do experience in Mumbai

Even if you saw in some to programs how Mumbai slam looks like and how people live and work here, you are not able to really understand how it is there before you come and see. This experience is a must-do experience when you’re in Mumbai. In addition, we had a great guide Varsha, who answered all our questions and showed and explained everything that you will not be able to find without a guide on your own in Dharavi. I highly recommend this tour.

There is perhaps always an ethical debate about making tours such as these. But Mumbai is full of such challenges. Our guide Pooja made this issue completely visible and engaged with us and liaised throughout the tour with the residents and commercial workers to make it fully understandable for all parties. This is a very difficult diplomatic role and she was superb! Her command of language is exceptional and she ensured we did not overstep the mark. Congratulations for having her, and as the first female tour guide, and thank you for the whole experience.

Dancing with Pooja in the bag shop! Watching the young boys play cricket. We found out a lot about the running every day life of the Slums. Pooja was very informative as she came from the slums originally, so knew everything about the place.

Pooja was such a vibe!! So funny and informative of the slum. She made the experience memorable, safe, and filled with laughter. We are so thankful that she shared her knowledge, kindness, and a special part of her background with us. We love pooja! She’s sharp witted and a hoot. She had a huge impact on our understanding of the community. Pooja showed us around the area she grew up in with so much lightness and fun. In the west, you’re often showed only one side of things from the slums. But with Pooja, you see the slums as they are. We immediately felt comfortable with her, learned a lot, felt a lot, laughed a lot. Would recommend her to anyone.

Puja is an outstanding guide. Being a native of Dharavi, her insights are invaluable. I was surprised to learn how much industry occurs in the slum, especially how many products are supplied to Western retailers. Highly recommended.

Nice tour, would recommend

My sister and I waited inside Third Wave Coffee Shop for our tour guide to come. We did not receive any prior information of who our tour guide would be, so we just waited to see who would turn up looking like one. Our guide, Pooja, called me on Whatsapp to locate me, and she came inside the coffee store to find us. Turns out other people on the tour were also waiting inside the coffee shop. Including us 2, there was a total of 8 people on the tour. NB Pooja was not in tour guide uniform. She gathered us and walked us over to Dharavi to start the tour, and stopped at several places (train station, entrance etc.) to give some background information about the area and general Mumbai transport as well. She had great English, great delivery and fun humour as well, making several jokes along the way and interacting with us. She first brought us to the commercial section where workers where mainly working plastic and making products such as soap, clothes and bags. There was a certain street where they were cutting plastic that created such an unbearable stinging scent that made us all cough and not breathe properly, so we had to leave that area quickly. Otherwise, it was interesting to learn about the different processes happening there. She then took us through streets/the river where Slumdog Millionaire was filmed, and through a nicer area selling food and fruits etc., though without stopping or more introduction. We then arrived at the leather section, where she introduced the industry some more, and she brought us to what we reckon is a partner shop where we stayed for somewhat longer than expected as we waited for some fellow members to shop for the leather backpacks they wanted. We then moved onto the last pottery area, which we only stayed for a very short period of time, I suppose because time was up, so didn't get much introduction from Pooja there, then quickly walked back to our starting point. Overall was very interesting, glad to have joined to learn more about Dharavi. I would say Pooja's walking pace was very quick, so although my sister and I kept us fine, fellow members who walked more leisurely almost lost us along the way, especially when traffic and crowd flow was so busy, so would recommend sticking closer as a pack. I was initially rather worried about dress code and safety, but we were fine in our normal attire (short sleeve top and long pants), and at no point felt endangered or harassed, though when we stopped to get some water, my sister did get asked by some beggars to give them money, so there's that.

Educational tour!

The tour was very educational, seeing the commercial and residential side of the Dharavi slums. Ravi was very professional and spoke with great English. The tour did feel like it dragged towards the end and you could tell the group became tired. One small thing to note is that we were under the impression that our client would be from the slum itself, but this does not take anything away from Ravi and his tour. Would recommend

A Tour Not To Be Missed

The Dharavi Slums Tour is not to be missed. Puja made sure that our ideas of slums was completely corrected, showing the industry that was forthcoming from the smallest working areas imaginable. Our guide Puja, had a wonderful personality and was so friendly and interesting. All in all a brilliant tour.
