A great way to experience Aukland
ldhackett, Apr 2024
Mike was a great guide who shared the history of the volcanoes and Aukland. It was a great way to see so much more of what Aukland really is. It was lots of walking but definitely worth all the steps to the summit of the volcanoes to see the sights of Aukland.
Tour is Exactly as Advertised

The full-day Grand Auckland Volcanoes tour did not disappoint. Mike of Voltours picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel. He was very organized and knowledgeable. We visited all the places mentioned in the tour description. Sure there's lots of walking especially up and around the craters at Mangere Mountain and to the top of Mount Eden. But the views made it worthwhile. In the afternoon we were driven to the top of Mt Victoria because someone in the group couldn't do the climb. So grateful! Besides volcanoes, we saw lots of sheep at the base of One Tree Hill, black swans near a pump station, lava rocks along the coast and a military fortress. We had an hour to get lunch in town and later stopped for ice cream near a beach. Mike often offered to take photos of us with our cameras. A nice touch.
Opt for the half day. Good tour for novices to geology/volcanology and new to the Maori culture.

We did the full day tour but found the half day would have met our needs. We were disappointed that our guide had no geology or volcanology related experience or degree, although TripAdvisor/Viator stated "expert guide". He said he "read a book". We should have asked more details before we booked, our mistake. We found ourselves wanting something meatier. The views are stunning and we enjoyed all the historical commentary about the Maori.
Amazing trip

Mike was an amazing tour guide who kept you interested in the history of NZ. The views of our tour were magnificent. Expect some hiking but it was all fun and good.

Mike was an awesome tour guide. He took time to explain everything to us, even making a little game out of it (giving us an opportunity to guess the answers). All of the stops were perfect, with amazing views. Keep in mind that this tour does require quite a bit of uphill walking and you will get a good workout! Also, I liked the fact that I was supporting a small business.
Chaotic, treats his clients differently
Donja_H, Feb 2024
I spent one whole month in New Zealand and did everyday a tour. This one was the only disappointment I had. I usually don't give negative reviews but here I feel I have to. My first point is that I had to sit in the stinky back of the train. I know not everyone can sit in the front but using a vehicle where one of your clients has no view and not really fresh air crosses the line. There were many little examples like that. When it came to taking pictures of us, I was already the last one from the group and waiting in the burning sun. The guide Mike still felt it is necessary to take first pictures of foreigners than of his paying clients. So good so far. These are little things. A little awkward was also that he told me that it's interesting that in Germany they let me have my job (I'm very high qualified and have a very high position). I found it intersection that he finds that interesting (maybe because I am young and a woman?, anyways weird comment. What he will tell you about Maori culture and history is different than what Maori people will tell you. There is no judgment , just mentioning. The tour didn't end where it was supposed to be according to the description of the tour, but at the end he said: you can take the ferry to get back (I had to pay 8 dollars). Also unlike he said the ferry doesn't come every 10 minutes but every 30 minutes. In my case it had even a delay and I was waiting for an hour. Not cool. There were also other things that othered me, but I spent enough time for this review.
Response from Host, Feb 2024
Hi, thanks for your feedback. We’re sorry that you did not have a good experience on your tour, and that there may have been some misunderstandings. The ferry back from Devonport is offered as an option to have the experience to cross Auckland harbour and view the city from the water, and it is often a shorter route back into the city due to traffic. We are always happy to offer a ride back to your hotel, if that is preferred.
Volcano Hikes

Mike is an excellent guide. He knows a lot about the geology of the volcanoes and the history of the Māori settling in the area. We had excellent views of the city and harbor. Be aware there is hiking up and down some of the volcanoes and wear appropriate shoes.
Great tour

We saw Auckland from the various volcanoes surrounding it. Lovely views, great information. Even in the rain, the tour was lovely

This is a great experience because of Mike who created this unique tour. He's extremely knowledgeable about the geological history of Auckland and providing some fascinating insights and visiting numerous exciting viewpoints. The afternoon portion of the tour was equally interesting with a walk through the gun emplacements at North Head and walk along the wall separating a lake from the ocean and showing how the lake water is filtered through the lava field to reach the ocean. There is a fair amount of walking involved. On the negative side, seating in the 11 person van was tight.with the van full.

Fantastic tour. If you haven't seen Auckland from the volcanoes' height, you haven't seen Auckland. The views are great and the guide very informative, it helps you get the topography better and appreciate the city like no other way. Highly recommended, either half day just mainland volcanoes, or the full day.

The highlight of our tour was Mike. He's extremely knowledgeable, affable, and attentive. We didn't have the best of weather but we got to see so many craters and wonderful views of the entire city. The afternoon walk along the lava flows by the beach was extremely memorable. We are sure we would never have been to see everything we did and learned so much about the history of volcanoes without Mike. Definitely bring your walking shoes and camera because you'll spend the whole day not wanting to miss seeing a single thing. We highly recommend to everyone who's already been or never been to Auckland to do this tour because it will help you see the city and appreciate its unique history/geography in a completely different way!

This was a fabulous tour. We visited a variety of volcanoes that you might not know were volcanoes is someone didn't tell you. Mike was very knowledgeable about the area and the history. He added a lot of information that you couldn't get if you just visited the site yourself. It was great to be outside and hiking around the craters- and you even had the chance to climb down into one of the craters if you wanted to. The afternoon lava field was absolutely fascinating- something I didn't know Auckland had. Definitely a well planned, organized, and interesting tour.

Our all day volcano tour was fantastic. The tour involved a lot of walking/borderline hiking in some areas, up to the tops of domes and down into the craters and along seashore rocks. You should be in decent shape and definitely wear good walking shoes. There were some areas of unsure footing so good balance is helpful. The nice thing though, was that the guide, Mike, kept us very informed about the conditions and effort needed in each case and it was always optional. If you weren't comfortable hiking down a steep path, you could see and appreciate the area just as well from another spot. You travel all around Auckland, covering a surprising amount of ground, to see the various domes remaining. Mike had good knowledge of the area and the history of the domes and other geological artifacts visible around the city. The tour never seemed rushed, it felt like we could spend as much or as little time at each location as we wanted, he would snap photos for us and was happy to discuss all sorts of topics in addition to the volcanoes. We were probably lucky to have a small group for the morning and afternoon sessions, so it made it easier to discuss and get around. We had a short tea break in the morning session, at a local shop and he did have water bottles available, a definite bonus. There is a break for lunch, on your own, and then you meet up again for the afternoon session. The afternoon was slightly different, not strictly volcanoes, with an optional walk along a beach and some time spent at old barracks built on top of one of the domes. Wonderful view and great exercise. This tour is for anyone wanting to get outside and see the city from a different perspective, geology that you wouldn't otherwise think about, and some Maori history too. After being on a cruise ship for over a week, we loved being outside, walking a lot and getting great views of the city and area from every direction. A very good deal!!

Such an awesome tour. There is the just morning and just afternoon option but we decided to do the full day one. And it was worth it. Very informative and interesting. It was a great perspective of the city as well and we were able to see so much of it. Mike was very knowledgeable and told us very interesting things about the area and the volcanoes history. We never would have had this experience on our own. In the afternoon we got to see and walk along old lava flows that are now partially covered by the sea, but during low tide you can see and walk all over it. Breathtaking! Also where we went there were never a lot of people to get in our way of the views and scenery. Definitely a tour worth doing.

Mike is fantastic as a volcano guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the day with him. Loved the small group experience and the depth of knowledge Mike has. It helps that he is a really great person as well. We recommend this tour!
