What To Expect

Your art historical tour of Provence begins with your pickup by minivan from Avignon. Over the course of six hours, follow in the footsteps of famous artist Vincent Van Gogh, one of the world’s most celebrated painters.

Stop in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to see Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum where Van Gogh was institutionalized, this site became a natural subject of his and enjoy a tour of the asylum where Van Gogh painted his ‘Wheat Field’ series.

Finish your tour in the UNESCO-listed city of Arles. Admire the sleepy beauty of this riverside town, known to many as the landscape for Van Gogh’s famous paintings La maison jaune and Le jardin de l'hotel Dieu. Take some free time to wander the sun-washed streets and view settings of Van Gogh’s famous works like the Cafe Terrace at Night (Le café de nuit).

Great tour and tour guide. While the tour was focused on Van Gogh, we also learned a lot about the history of France and the Provence region from our very knowledgeable and friendly guide. It was very impactful to physically be in and see the region and areas that Vincent Van Gogh painted. It helped us understand the importance of these areas for the Van Gogh's life and why he chose to paint them. Arles is a wonderful town and we had time to roam and see the sights and taste the food. I highly recommend this tour.

I learned a lot, both about Arles (who knew there was bullfighting?) and about Van Gogh. And visiting the psychiatric hospital in St. Remy proved much more interesting than I expected.

Remy was super. Knowledgable of Van Gogh and of the history and sights in the several areas we visited. Always wanting to answer questions and point out what could be easily missed. More than just a tour about Van Gogh but a tour of where he lived and worked. Excellent.

Our tour guide is very knowledgeable about the history of Avignon, able to explain the influence of Roman period, the time Van Gogh spent in Avignon. He guided us to the places as stated in the itinerary. Ticket fee to the foundation is included and we are having free time to explore ourselves there. We are given lunch time at Arles, so we can explore a bit the shops there if you chose to have a quick lunch. The weather was quite warm in summer, it would be good if water is provided. You can purchase at the foundation if you run out, otherwise might have to wait till lunch time.

We didn’t go because no one showed up or called to leave a message. The reason we came and stayed I Avignon was to both go to Aix and to do the Van Gogh tour. We had no time left during our stay, so we missed out totally. We thought Viator was better than this. We wasted a lot of money to get nothing.

St. Remy and the mental hospital where he stayed stayed for a year was very interesting. And the sights in Arles were compelling. Didn’t know about the Roman influence and the amphitheater. Learned a lot.

Fantastic guide who shared stories and facts about the region the entire trip. Really made the whole experience extra special. We saw some great Van Gogh sites as well as some Roman history. Highlights were the hospital room he stayed in and the 2 spots where he painted. Really enjoyable day made extra special by an informed guide who knew his subject but really knew his region.

This tour name is extremely misleading...

This tour name is extremely misleading. I honestly thought being in the epicenter of Arles and St. Remy that you could easily spend 4-5 hours discussing Van Gogh's work. When I brought this up to our tour guide, he thought if it this truly was the content, the tour would not be sellable. When I was doing my own research on Arles, the city had a map of 9 Van Gogh paintings that were made within the city limits and walkable. The tour had a walk through Arles to see the arena, some roman ruins and 2 Van Gogh pics. There was only 30 minutes of free time to pursue other Van Gogh options which were not possible. No time to visit the Van Gogh foundation either. The other false advertising is the group is suppose to be 8 people. For the Arles walkthrough we were combined with another group and became 16 for this segment. What really became frustrating is the other group was on an all day tour, which gave them an opportunity to go into the asylum hospital where Van Gogh stayed. Our group was brought to the front of the property and given 15 minutes not enough time to go in and see it there is a separate admission charge. Very disappointing. This tour needs a serious rework on the Van Gogh side. The only positive was the multimedia Picasso show in Les Baux en Provence. This was awesome- 45 minutes. Happy to have stayed longer. This was worth it! Loved this.
