What To Expect

Take a walk back in time as you explore the many layers of history found in Berlin, covering everything from its Prussian period, to its violent 20th century and the present period of rebirth. History fans and those interested in the remarkable renaissance of Berlin’s urban center will enjoy this insightful, half-day trip past the city’s key monuments.

Start your day at Neue Promenade 3 where you'll meet your guide. Listen to an introductory overview of the strange, winding history of Berlin, covering the city’s founding and continuing with stories about the turbulent years of war and modern era as the tour moves forward. Walk down Berlin’s Unter den Linden boulevard, a thoroughfare that links Stadtschloss royal palace with Pariser Platz and Brandenburg Gate. By the 19th century, this elegant street was among the most famous in the city, growing even more grand as Berlin’s boundaries pushed further west.

Head next to Museum Island, pausing at the Berlin State Library (once the workplace of Albert Einstein) and the Neue Wache memorial as you continue. Travel beneath the monumental Brandenburg Gate, which forms the beginning of Unter den Linden, and check out the Reichstag, home of Germany’s parliament, just nearby. Then explore Pariser Platz, the location of Hitler’s bunker and the Holocaust Memorial, commemorating the many Jews that lost their lives during the Nazi regime.

Trace the path of the “death strip” to Checkpoint Charlie, the infamous crossing point for those traveling between East and West Berlin, and visit Bebelplatz, the location of an infamous 1933 book burning by the Nazis. You’ll then have time the stroll along the Berlin Wall, demarcating the boundary between East and West during the Cold War, and hear details about its triumphant downfall in 1989.

Take a moment to stop at the Topography of Terror Museum, situated at the former Gestapo and SS Headquarters. Hear from your guide about the significance of the museum’s location, which the city’s leaders consciously chose to help confront and reconcile the awful moments of Berlin’s past. Look down into the building’s excavated cellars, a haunting spot where political prisoners were once tortured and killed.

Fantastic tour, highly recommend!
Lindsay_C, May 2024
We took the walking tour with Jonathan N, who was a fantastic tour guide!! He was very knowledgeable, and was very funny. The tour was well paced, stopping often and providing really interesting insights that we wouldn’t have had if we had tried to walk around by ourselves. Definitely worth taking if you are in Berlin!

I did the tour with Rebecca as our guide and had a fantastic time. Rebecca was incredible knowledgeable to the rich history of Berlin and I learnt a lot! There's so much to discover! I was worried that a 3-4 hour tour might be boring or an overload of information, but she was very engaging and it was a wholly enjoyable experience! I was a solo traveller but was able to connect with some other people and ended up going out for lunch afterwards - which I think speaks for the fun nature of the tour.
Excellent tour guide.

The rise and fall and rise again of Berlin
frank_e, May 2024
Our knowledgeable tour guide, Amanda. So much knowledge in such a young person. The ability to involve her tourists in her presentation The monuments, the architecture, the varied history. The contribution of and destruction by the leadership of Prussia and subsequent Germany. I am a retired teacher of Renaissance through modern European history. This tour allowed me to actually see and contact the history I taught. A once in a lifetime experience.
Full of info, delivered with heart

Having overheard a few other tours in the city I was worried about having a dry, formal school like lecture with walking. I needn’t have worried! Our guide (Lewis) made the tour fun, energetic, emotional and for once in my life I’ve actually retained a few historical facts! I am so happy I booked this tour. My only advisory would be that the tour doesn’t end near where you start, so plan ahead how to get back.
Clear and entertaining tour of Berlin history and culture
Constance_A, May 2024
Our guide Rohan was trained in theater, which made his narration of German history in Berlin entertaining as well as enlightening. His clear explanation of the development of one social/political/economic movement to the next clarified and consolidated my previously meager knowledge of Berlin history. Admittedly this had come mostly from WW II and spy novels and movies. Rohan kept up a lively pace over the course of 4 hours, but frequent stops made it doable for elderly participants like us. The group was relatively large (about 22) but we were all able to hear his descriptions and ask questions without the aid of listening devices. This was clearly the best tour in our trip to this part of Germany.
Bad experience
Priyam_B, May 2024
Our guide Jonathan was very insensitive, didn't wait for the all the members of the group to reach a spot for starting his commentary. The info points at the sites probably had more information than what he was saying.
Response from Host, May 2024
Der Pryam, Thank you for taking the time to review your tour with Jonathan K. All our guides undergo a stringent process of training and testing when joining our company, and once guiding with us are consistently quality controlled. Most of our guides have also studied History at Bachelor's, Master's, and even Ph.D. levels in their native country or here at universities in Berlin, and have a wealth of knowledge which they are happy to share, and there is always room for extra questions from your side as well. Therefore, I am surprised to hear you were unsatisfied with the amount of information given on the various sights. I have looked into this further and I can confirm the guide in question had several 5 star reviews for the very same tour you reviewed, on Tripadvisor and Google. Our guides are always happy to adjust their pace to our guests, however, you booked a public tour with 20 or so other guests. Within the given time frame of 3.5-4 hours, our guides need to have a certain time limit at each spot in order to show you all the sights. We feel like a private tour with a somewhat slower pace might have been more suitable for you. Maybe next time :) We hope you enjoyed your stay in Berlin nevertheless. Kind regards, Caroline
Fantastic Tour Guide

Rebecca as a guide was fantastic- knowledgeable, balanced, and insightful while describing many different times of turmoil in the history of Berlin.
Must do tour!
Brisa_A, May 2024
Chris from Canada was our tour guide and I just have to say he was great. He was friendly, he talked and we all listened. He made history fun cracking a few jokes here and there. I felt like he did not push the tour to hurry up like most tour guides do. I would recommend this tour to anyone it is a great price, good tour guide, and the locations are a must see in Berlin. FYI the meeting spot is so easy to spot right by Starbucks and they also have a sign outside just incase your not 100% sure.
Great experience

Our guide, Steve, was the best ever! He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and just a great tour guide. I would highly recommend this walking tour, and hopefully, you'll get Steve as the guide. For a young man, he sure knew so much about the history of Berlin.
Eclectic and informative
Paula_J, May 2024
This tour presents a nice overview of different aspects of mostly the old East Berlin area. It starts at one of the famous markets and goes down Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate with stops along to see Humboldt Univeristy and plaza where book burning took place under the Nazis. You see the museums on the island and the Cathedral and receive interesting historical information along the way. Joel as a guide was knowledgeable and personable and made it a great day.
