What To Expect

Get picked up at your Johannesburg hotel for a quick introduction before starting your journey to Soweto.

Pass one of the World Cup stadiums along the way, and then arrive in the Diepkloof area full of vendors selling all kinds of things. Travel along Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, a street on which the homes of two Nobel Peace Prize winners are—Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Choose an optional visit to the Mandela House. Learn about the 1976 Soweto Uprising and the death of a young boy named Hector Pieterson.

Continue through Soweto into a shanty town where you can meet some of the locals. Travel past the Soweto Campus of Johannesburg University and then the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the world's largest hospital, where your tour ends.

Rejoin your guide after a lunch break (own expense) to visit the famous Apartheid Museum before returning to Johannesburg. Visit the Telkom Tower, an imposing 882 feet (269 meters) tall. See Constitution Hill, where Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were once imprisoned, as well as the court (when it's not in session).

See the longest bridge in Southern Africa, the Nelson Mandela Bridge, and visit the area called Newtown to stroll along the Jazz Walk of Fame in Mary Fitzgerald Square. Finish your tour with an elevator ride up to the top of the Carlton Centre, the tallest building on the continent.

Very information And good shopping. I found the people to be very friendly. My tour guide was excellent, He is definitely in the right Job.
Best way to see the best of Johannesburg

The Tour Driver cum Guide : Mr Sunny - was a ball of energy - very knowledgeable and witty with his comments throughout the trip - so kept the group highly entertained
Great experience.

The whole tour was great and well presented, Soweto was a very sad part for us to see people living with very little, but we were glad to be shown the real life of Soweto.
Room for improvement but good tour

The tour was over packed and it was somewhat uncomfortable. Including my party of 3 there were an additional 7 people. One person needed a medical accommodation which became somewhat cumbersome when entering and exiting the van. Overall the tour guide was fantastic. He attempted to keep us on time but sometimes we ran late for certain things (to no fault of his own due to the time of the constitution hill tour). He was very informative with the history of the country. Overall, 4 stars.
A BIG MUST DO...FOR ALL

This was the most educational tour! Not all the information was positive, but the information was an eye opener. Our guide, Marcy, was very informative and added her families history and struggles, to the larger picture. We were able to see, learn and absorb what times were like and the struggles achieved. The tour states ten hours, which scare any people, but don’t be deterred, it’s only eight hours. ☺️
Johannesburg highlight

The tour was very informative especially about the rise and fall of apartheid and of course the life and death of Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest persons to have walked this earth.
Interesting but can be depressive

The toud gives a quite good overview of the city and of the history of the country. However, you have to be emotionally prepared for the tour - the prison/apartheid museum and Hector Petersen memorials parts of the tour are not "funny place". The guide is great. P.S. Bring some sweets for kids in Soweto.
A brilliant full day tour encompassing everything!

This full day tour was brilliant from start to finish and very organised. We were able to visit Constitution Hill, the constitutional court, the apartheid museum and the huge township of Soweto. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and it was fascinating to learn facts and history in relation to both Johannesburg and the country itself; the best part of the tour was Mo guiding us through Soweto and visiting his home. The tour of Soweto did make us appreciate the luxuries at our disposal in the UK and was a huge eye opener to the economic chasm that exists in South Africa.
Good introduction to Johannesburg
matthewdA3140SW, Aug 2019
I very much enjoyed the tour as it offers a strong introduction to the city. Our guide, Bobo, was very friendly and knowledgeable about the city. I thought the trip was very well-organized and paced with just the right amount of time at each stop. I know that some people might want more time to explore the Apartheid Museum but I found two hours to be quite sufficient. My only suggestion for improving the tour would be to include lunch with it - there is also no time to eat lunch at the Apartheid Museum so perhaps lunch could be scheduled for a different stop on the tour.
Great Tour, Not enough time.
Fantasia_W, Jun 2019
The tour was great ! However, I constantly felt like we were being rushed to the next thing. We toured Johannesburg first but I would have prefered to start in Soweto. When we arrived to both the Hector Pieterson Museum and the Nelson Mandela Museum we had a limited amount of time because they were close to closing. If the Apartheid Museum is something you are interested in be prepared to some back a second time. We were allowed 2 hours including lunch but if you would like to take your time and read everything it can easily take up an entire day by itself. Overall I think it was a great tour. My tour guide BoBo was knowledgeable and friendly. It was a great way to get familiarized with the area and I would recommend it to anyone !
Great way to get to know Joburg
Hana_L, May 2019
I was very lucky to have Bobo for my tour and also to be the only person on the tour for half of the day. It felt very personal and I could take the time I needed at each point. Bobo is a great teacher and gave me loads of information throughout the tour and just fun facts whilst we were driving around which was really nice. The Apartheid Museum was brilliant, as I expected but also very intense and I would probably like to go back to soak in more from that. Seeing Soweto from a local prospective was a heart warming experience, it made me feel like I really got a better insight into how people live. Mo did part of this tour, a local, who is a fantastic artist and he was very inspiring. Overall, I thought it was worthwhile and made me feel more familiar and understand the city better.
An excellent day tour of Johannesburg
Sherman_K, Jan 2019
Our guide, Nick, was an excellent guide, knew Johannesburg well, and had an excellent attitude. I wish the van had a speaker system so the people in the back of the van could hear better. I strongly recommend.
Wonderful tour day
Carla_T, Dec 2018
This tour was informative and hit the highlights of Johannesburg and Soweto. I think we visited the sites in a way that helped tell the story of recent history in S. A. Our tour guide Thsolo and his helper Fresh were a wealth of knowledge and made us feel very welcomed. Highly recommend!

October 21st. We had a most amazing day with Thabang touring your wonderful city Johannesburg. We have looked forward to this day for a long time and and it far surpassed our expectations. Thabang is a wonderful ambassador for your company as well as your country and its inspiring history. He taught us to cherish dear Mr Mandela and appreciate better how much he brought not only to South Africa but to the world. Every tour stop was worthy of our time spent. The very special visit was in the community in Soweto. We are so glad Thabang was willing to take us there. We have a much better understanding of the South African township life and we are richer for it. Please know for yourself and tell him for us we think he is a wonderful guide. Please let me know how to send a review to Viator. It will be 5 stars. Sincerely,Kevin Lemon

The tour was worthwhile; the tourist guide make all the difference. Am glad I took this tour; got to know Johannesburg's past and present life.
An excellent four for those who know little about S.Africa
John_S, Oct 2018
A good overview of the struggles that S. Africa is going through. We saw a lot and know the history that has lead to their problems. We saw all of the city and the good things and the poverty that has yet to be overcome.
Great Tour of Joberg
