What To Expect

Meet your private guide at the AirAsia–Bukit Bintang Monorail station for a personalized 2-hour evening tour of Malaysian cuisine. Discuss local favorites before setting off toward the nightlife area of Jalan Bukit Bintang. Head to the Hutong Food Court for a taste of siew bao (crispy barbecued roasted chicken buns) and chicken curry puff, a pastry filled with savory chicken.

From here it's a short stroll to Jalan Alor, a bustling food street lined with rows of hawker stalls and seafood restaurants. Your guide will help you select the most delicious dim sum, along with a street food tasting of grilled satay lok lok with peanut sauce.

On arrival at the mamak (typical Malaysian eatery) at SK Corner, try the paper dosa, a paper-thin type of pancake eaten with several Indian sauces such as curry or coconut chutney. Before saying your good-byes, wash it all down with a glass of teh tarik, a popular drink of milk tea.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Malaysia and the food culture. We enjoyed all the different foods/meals, we even visited some of the places again the following day. I’d recommend this to anyone visiting Kuala Lumpar!!

Disappointing Service

Unfortunately, didn't get to experience this tour at all. We thought the tour was on Sunday but we had booked it on Saturday accidently, which is on us. We received an email 30 minutes beforehand with our tour guides phone details, as I thought it was the next day I didn't think too much of it as there was no other information to highlight that it was today. When the time came the tour guide did not contact me as the booker to let me know that we had missed our start time of 5:30pm. From 6pm to 8pm I had my phone on me and was checking it regularly. I did not receive any messages or calls from anyone during that time. After the day was done I noticed that someone had sent and deleted messages on WhatsApp. I have had multiple people send random things on WhatsAppa and via SMS, so I didn't pay it not mind (again I thought our tour was the following day) and I blocked the number. Again no calls were made and these messages had been deleted by the sender so I could not see their contact. If it was following us up to check where we were, why were the messages deleted? I realised in the morning when I received a request from Viator to review the tour that we had missed it. Viator support was helpful but the tour operator was not. No possibility of reschedule (understandable, though I could see that there were still spots I could book for that night just later) and no refund. I understand that 100% refund would be unreasonable as someone spent their time waiting for us. The part that has prompted this review to be written is that the tour operator did not try to call us or get in contact. If those deleted messages were the "contact" why were they deleted? This was a private tour so it was just us and I would expect a call or some thing more. We were 20 minutes away and if we had been contacted we would have made every effort to get there. Admittedly, the initial cause of this was our mistake but I wonder what would happen if we had been lost or had gone to the wrong meeting point. Very different level of service compared to other tours booked on Viator and the other tours we had in Malaysia.

Not a tour for foodies.

This food tour is only for the very novice traveler who doesn’t know anything about Asian food. If you know even a little bit about Indian or Chinese food then this is not for you. The food we tasted was also not the best quality or variety . I’ve had way better.

I booked this rather brief private food tour for two. During my correspondence before the tour, I specifically informed the guide (Zack) in writing about our allergies to mushrooms, cheese, & gluten and preferences for Halal foods. Unfortunately, and to much of our wild surprise, the guide did not seem to consider this information during the tour. Upon my request, we begin the tour with a heavy meal. For the very first one, our guide ordered us a soup dish containing mushrooms(!!) Expecting our guide to be knowledgeable of the local cuisine and trusting him to prioritize our preferences and restrictions, we began to eat it without any questions. And during the meal, he talked about the dish, and he casually mentions mushroom as an ingredient while expecting us to enjoy it (imagine that!) One of us had to immediately stop enjoying the soup and take measures to mitigate the allergic reaction before things took a turn for the worse. I had to right then and there, remind him of our conversation, and (once again) bring to his attention of our allergies. He took a moment and seemed a little lost, as if he wasn't informed well in advance. Having this dish, cooked with allergens particular to us, made us feel uneasy for days afterwards. Also, we felt our guide could have been more educated on gluten, and gluten-free options. Because of our guide's negligence, the quality of the rest of our stay was impacted and minimized. It compromised our ability to fully enjoy whatever remained of the trip in Malaysia. One of us still feels sickly (including, numb tongue, rashes, digestive concerns) even though this tour was over one week ago. Beyond the safety concerns, the tour itself fell short of expectations. Instead of showcasing the flavor-rich delicacies of Malaysian cuisine, the experience felt bland and generic. We missed out on gems (that didn't contain our allergens) that I had anticipated. It seemed like the guide was forced to improvise last minute, lacking the preparation and knowledge I expected from a private food tour. So in short, while we appreciated the opportunity to explore the local cuisine, we felt our safety and dietary needs were not prioritized, even though this a personalized tour. An interesting thing to note here is that - This food tour was for tasting just 5 different items and our guide couldn't even get that right without exposing us to a potentially life-threatening situation due to his disregard for our allergies first.

TK was a fantastic host. First, we realized that the airport was far from the pick-up spot, and TK moved the tour back an hour and a half. He also helped us plan our journey into town. And then when we arrived later, he was flexible enough to do the first stops pretty quickly since we were really hungry, and then we had a chill time later on. He had tons of recommendations for places to go and see outside of the tour, and not only that -- once we told him we were only doing one night in KL before going to Borneo, he had recommendations for there too! And the food was super fantastic. I had a peanut-free set of food (I have an allergy) and he ensured I didn't accidentally eat any. There were lots of choices too, like whether we wanted sweet or savory dessert, how spicy we wanted certain things, and whether we would eat "anything" (you'll know what I mean when you book it). I've been on food tours all over the world and this one really stood out.

This tour was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Reka was one of the best guides you could hope for. Very warm, friendly, and super knowledgeable about Malaysia's history and it's diverse culture. You could really tell that she was focused on making sure that her guests have the best experience possible by tailoring everything to their needs. The food selections were absolutely delicious--you will not be disappointed (my recommendation would be to skip lunch so that you have more room for all the tastings)!

Expensive waste of money

This was a waste of time and money, 5 different things including a burger and 3 snacks. We expected to sample a number of different foods but were disappointed to only have 3 and then a big burger and roti. The host Ragesh was very pleasant and very knowledgeable but no sooner had we started than we were finished in a back street, left to find our way back to a known area.

This was a really good way to find the hidden gems and local culinary delights. Not everything was a hit from the six dishes as we walked through the busy streets, but there was plenty to enjoy nonetheless. Our guide Siddoz was amazing, really knowledgeable about the food, the city and the country!
