What To Expect

The adventure begins with pickup at your La Fortuna hotel and a scenic drive through landscapes rich with tropical beauty and wildlife habitats. After arriving at Tenorio Volcano National Park, embark on a moderately challenging hike through the park’s protected habitat. Along the way, your guide helps scout for animal sightings and points out highlights of passing flora and fauna.

The effort is well worth it when you reach the beautiful, bright-blue waters of Rio Celeste (Blue River). The otherworldly hue is thanks to converging volcanic minerals from two different rivers, resulting in a rare and photogenic chemical reaction. Snap pictures from a lookout point, admire a tropical waterfall, and see the point where the river changes color. You also have a chance to soak in natural warm-water river pools if you like.

After exploring this fairytale-like landscape, replenish your energy with a delicious lunch of typical Costa Rican cuisine. Relax on the return drive to La Fortuna, where the full-day tour concludes with drop-off back at your hotel.

Great day and adventure!
April_M, Apr 2024
I’m glad I did this hike with this tour group. Santiago has a great eye for spotting all of the forest creatures! He made sure everyone in the group was okay and has great knowledge of this area. He keeps an uplifting vibe with his humor. Great day and adventure. The reason i had to minus a star was because the van was just hot and uncomfortable. Maybe fix the vans or get new ones. It’s about 3 hours in that van round trip.
Beautiful water, lots of cool wildlife!
Angelene_C, Apr 2024
Our guide Santiago was great! He was able to spot so much wildlife for us, in the park we saw several snakes and birds and outside the park we saw a poison frog and a sloth! The hike was good and the water was beautiful. The only downside for us was that we were the first on the tour picked up and last dropped off so that added a lot of bus time. If you aren’t in central La fortuna, I’d recommend just driving in and meeting at the office.
My friend and I spent 10...
Havana_W, Apr 2024
My friend and I spent 10 days around Costa Rica and this guided tour was the best tour we had! We were in a small group and Santiago (best guide ever) made us all feel like family. His knowledge of the entire park and its wildlife was exceptional & he had us smiling and laughing throughout the entire day! The lunch was excellent from a Soda in the town and the drive to and from was super exciting as we spotted some wildlife! The park itself is soooo beautiful and Santiago made sure we saw it all! 10/10 experience and we would do it all over again! Big love from T&T🇹🇹
Let down by substandard minibus
Anthony_B, Apr 2024
Whilst the sights were unique, the minibus was far too hot in my opinion and it didn’t help that those on the trip were told to sit on the minibus before the guide arrived and so we were too hot before the van was even switched on. My wife asked the driver to stop after about 5 minutes as she felt faint but a kind youngster who was sitting at the front swapped seats with her. We must have travelled on 10 different minibuses during our time in Costa Rica and all the others had really good aircon but not this one. My seatbelt was broken too and so I couldn’t use it. The order of the day was strange: we went swimming immediately and then there was no one to check the tickets at the entrance to the park so there was twenty minute delay and then lunch was last at gone 3pm. The Rio Celeste was stunning though.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Hi Anthony, I apologize for the malfuncioning AC in the bus. It was a last minute replacement bus that turned out to have this problem. We are not using it anymore. The strange order was because the park was sold out in the morning and we could only obtain entrance tickets for later. We improviced and changed the order of activities to avoid dead time. You where peak highseason so even when we try to prebook tickets early we can be to late for the early entrances because of the fast amount of people booking. This lack of entrances only happens 3 weeks a year. Glad you did like the tour and the lunch.
Stunning view :)
Justine_G, Apr 2024
Our experience was very nice, a little bit too much people during the trail but you know, there is a lot of tourist who wants to view beautiful landscape. It was really nice, we went with two kids 7 and 4 yo and it was perfect :)
Great tour

We had an amazing day with the tour guide Ricardo… he was very knowledgeable and interesting… the river was beautiful and we saw lots of animals along the way Highly recommended
A Good Deal
Richard_N, Mar 2024
As a solo traveler, this was a great excursion to meet and become friends with other travelers. In addition to transporting us to the Rio Celeste, we stopped by a shop for breakfast treats and by a tree on the highway that had a sloth, which we saw through their mini-telescope. I appreciated hiking in the jungle with knowledgeable and caring guides, who helped us see creatures we wouldn't normally see on our own. The waterfall was grand, but the highlight was swimming in the river. The lunch was mid.
Great tour

A great tour with a passionate and dynamic guide! Exhaustive, expansive, complete and a lot of fun. The guides were sharing stories and explanations about the places with a lot of passion.
So beautiful

Loved this tour! Rio Celeste was probably my favorite part of Costa Rica. Franklin was a great guide- very personable and knowledgeable. Would highly recommend!
This is a must!
Heather_W, Mar 2024
Beautiful and cool. The hike was fairly easy with breathtaking views. This was cool and interesting to see how the water changes color. The waterfall was amazing.
Excellent tour, thanks to our guide Santiago
Emily_M, Mar 2024
This was an excellent tour. We were lucky to have our tour guide, Santiago, who was really phenomenal, and a small group (5 people), which enhanced the experience greatly. Santiago went above and beyond - he was very helpful on the trail, setting a reasonable pace and giving us a heads up when there may be difficult portions. He had a great sense of humor and was enthusiastic and engaging, telling us the history and science about the river and waterfall, as well as spotting a wide variety of wildlife both along the trail and during our drive to and from La Fortuna; we spotted monkeys, snakes, frogs, toucans, caimans, and sloths, and he helped us photograph them. I cannot emphasize enough that having a great tour guide makes all the difference, as there is no way I would have been able to spot even a quarter of the things on my own.
Good time
Frank_S, Mar 2024
Santiago, Franklin and Carlos were great. Beautiful scenery and monkeys, tucan, Caiman. Lots of fun. Good hike as well. A little longer than 8 hours but was a full and fun day
Wonderful day trip to Rio Celeste!!
Michaela_V, Mar 2024
Fast paced guide through the park area, but he was trying to get us to the attraction areas before it got too busy for good pictures. Moderately intense hike, be sure to remember a water bottle! The provided lunch was absolutely wonderful. We also got to stop to see a 400+ year old MASSIVE tree on our way to the park, and stopped at a swimming hole (same blue as the water in the park and waterfall areas) which was a wonderful experience. Highly recommend!
A nice day

Fabulous ❤️
Yana_M, Mar 2024
Fantastic day, amazing guides, very well paced tour. We found the hike to be very pleasant and not super challenging (we are a group of friends aged 36-54), the views and colors are amazing. We saw 2 snakes and a toucan 😄 had a blast swimming in the river ! Definitely recommend 💯
Good day trip to Rio Celeste waterfall
Bebe_L, Feb 2024
Beautiful waterfall with blue mineral water and nice hike. Stopped for a tasty simple lunch on the return
Fun day at the Rio Celeste
Shanna_S, Feb 2024
The Rio Celeste tour was amazing. We were a family of three with a 14 year old boy. Santiago and Joseph were informative and entertaining guides. The hike was moderate but it was with the effort. Everyone was patient if you were a little slower. We had a “sloth stop” and a bathroom break at a little bakery on the way which was delicious. Our son loved swimming in the river. We would highly recommend.
Great adventure
Rebecca_Z, Feb 2024
Our tour guide was awesome! He was super knowledgeable about different plants and animals. The lunch was also super yummy and nice to experience home style cooking.
Good day out
Tracey_B, Feb 2024
We had a lovely day out.....almost 11 hours from pick up to drop off! The guide was very knowledgeable and informative. We saw 3 different snakes, some different Toucans and other birds. No Sloths 😢. The waterfall was lovely. It was an enjoyable trip but too 'touristy ' for me personally
