What To Expect

Visit the Houmas House Plantation, dubbed ‘The Sugar Palace’ due to its contribution to the sugar boom of the late 1800s, when more than 20 million pounds of sugar were produced here annually.

Join one of the regularly scheduled House tours, at which point you’ll meet your costumed guide at the mansion’s entrance. On the tour, immerse yourself in the story and splendor of the old South as your guide leads you through lavish and traditionally decorated rooms, speckled with artwork and antiques. Hear the architectural history of the home, a stronghold plantation estate, and see the room where Bette Davis stayed while filming the 1963 movie Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte.

Spend your time before and after the house tour exploring the magnificent 38‐acre (15‐hectare) estate. Leisurely wind along manicure paths and through the exquisite gardens, find a quaint sitting nook for a rest, or head to one of the estate’s restaurants or café for a locally inspired lunch – and maybe a mint julep.

Sami did a wonderful job...
Darrell_O, Apr 2024
Sami did a wonderful job of guiding what was almost a personal tour of the Houmas Plantation (4 of us). Having read recently some of the history of the house, I knew that she knew what she was talking about. Nice young lady who did a professional job while being appropriately friendly and open with her clients. Her interest in history played well here.
Stunning
Gina_D, Apr 2024
Cheryl was our tour guide and she was very knowledgeable and kind. There were 4 of us on our tour and she took her time and allowed us to take pictures throughout the tour. Cheryl was happy to answer all of our questions about the beautiful Home and Gardens. We visited Oak Alley Plantation before Houmas House. Our visit to Houmas House was our favorite experience while visiting NOLA. If you are visiting the plantations, you won't want to miss Houmas. There's also a beautiful gift shop, restaurant and museum on the property.
Charming

This plantation tour was one of the better ones we’ve been on. it was very informative and interesting. The grounds are stunning with so much to look at. There are stairs though… some people had to turn down the opportunity to go to the second floor. I only mention this because I don’t remember being warned of there being stairs to climb but I may have overlooked it.

Thank you for taking a moment to share with us your experience. Glad you were able to enjoy our tour of the mansion. For future reference we do have an elevator that will take any guest to the second floor if they so chose to. My apologies If that was not offered to you at the time of your tour. It is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future. Best TW

Yolanda_F, Feb 2024
The Tour of the Plantation home was very elegant in presentation. Beautiful landscape,Our guide was very informative on the history. It was a great Idea to have the museum separate with all the historic artifacts. It gave you an opportunity to take in each aspect of this part of history. Although some of it was very sad to view in the Museum.

Thanks for the 5 star review and your positive feedback. All our tour guides do an amazing job at bringing the history and stories of Houmas House to life. We also take great pride in our museum which is filled with a large amount of history of life along the Mississippi dating back to the 1800’s. The good and the bad. Please do come back and see us again soon! Best TW!

We loved the property. Everything about Houmas house was so interesting. The history of the owners, the emaculant gardens, and the representation of the property's history was just lovely. Would love to go back in spring when everything is in bloom.

We (4 adults) enjoyed a great tour by Suzanne ( spelling). The day was gorgeous under great sprawling live oak trees. The home and lifestyle was explained with care and allowed the wow factor of life on a sugar plantation.
