Overview

Explore one of Iceland’s unique geological features during this tour. Snorkel between the North American and European tectonic plates at the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park. This area is known as the Silfra Fissure and is home to a number of unique marine species as well as incredible shades of blue. All necessary snorkeling equipment is provided as well as GoPro photos taken during the excursion.

Meeting point is at "Troll Expeditions Silfra" (write that on Google Maps). Please arrive 20 minutes prior to departure time. Directions: Park your car at P5 Thingvellir (parking lot 5) and walk to the meeting point Troll Expeditions Silfra.

What To Expect

With time to spare before the start of the tour, make your own way to the meetup point in Thingvellir National Park. Meet your guide and small group of fellow travelers and head for the nearby snorkeling area.

After a safety briefing, put on your provided snorkeling equipment and thermal dry suit and slip into the brisk Icelandic water for the unique experience of snorkeling between the North American and European tectonic plates. Under the watchful eye of your guide, who takes GoPro images of the experience, explore the crystal-clear glacial water of the Silfra fissure and its otherworldly geology and marine life.

Have read, signed, and followed directions on the Snorkeling Silfra Medical Statement Form –https://troll.is/medical). You can sign the form at the meeting location.
Be comfortable in water and be able to swim.
Communicate in English at the time of the tour.
Be physically fit.
You must be ready to wear a tight and constricting dry suit to protect your body from the cold.
You must be a minimum of 150 cm and a maximum of 200 cm in height and weigh between 45 and 120 kilos along with being physically fit.
You must be a maximum of 69 years of age to participate in this tour. If you are over 60 years of age, you need a medical waiver, available on page 2 of the Medical Statement.

You must be a minimum of 12 years of age to participate in this tour. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian booked on the same tour.
If you are over 45 and partake/have partaken in pipe smoking or heavy alcohol intake, you need a medical waiver.
Please note that should you have any neurological, circulatory or respiratory problems or underlying diseases, battled any illnesses or have any physical problems you might have to turn in a physicians allowance to participate in this tour.
Not recommended for pregnant travelers
Not allowed for people over 69 years old
No heart problems or other serious medical conditions
Travelers should have a moderate physical fitness level
This tour/activity will have a maximum of 6 travelers

Cancellation Policy

You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.

For a full refund, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the experience’s start time.
If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded.
Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.

Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.
This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund.

This was such a fun experience in Iceland. One of my favorite so far! The only issue with booking through a third party is that some communication is lost. We never received the medical clearance or directions that the parking lot was not at the same area at the meeting spot. The Troll tour group was able to complete the forms for us and didn't mind too much we were a few min late. Minus the housekeeping stuff, the tour was great. Ended the tour with some hot chocolate. Pictures were sent that night. Pablo was our tour guide and he was awesome. Highly recommend for everyone!

This was my best snorkeling experience, first time in fresh water. My guide helped make sure everything fit properly and that my mask was on correctly. The water was so clear I could watch the sun light filter through the water making little rainbows that danced over the rocks below.

This was such an amazing experience! James was the best guide- so calm and explained everything perfectly. After gearing up, we walked over and had to wait a while before entering the water. This was the worst part of the trip because it was windy and cold. Once we got in the water it was great! I would suggest wearing 2 pairs of wool socks with a hand warmer between. Your hands do get wet, so be ready for that! We would definitely do this again!

Awesome, awesome, awesome. This is an exceptional experience led by highly knowledgeable guide. Shared so much insight on the area and the tectonic plates. Can’t say enough good about this adventure. One that is a highlight posting for social media for sure. They even provide you photos of your swim. All equipment was in very good condition and kept us warm in the cold conditions. Impressed with the level of safety exhibited by entire staff. Always felt safe.

Make sure to bring your thermals as you can wear under the dry suit they give you. Make sure you’ve had some breakfast before it too. Our guide Kevin was brilliant

My boyfriend and I were so excited leading up to the day we went. Everything they described is exactly how it was. Yana was so awesome and extremely helpful when it came to putting on the wet suit and to making the experience all the more exciting. It was cold but once in the water you warm up and it’s a crazy experience. It’s definitely worth the money you pay. Also if you have long hair I would definitely recommend to braid it to the side or tie it up because i made the mistake of not doing so and my hair was a mess.

Beautiful views, you can’t believe that that’s what lies under the surface of the water. If you go in winter like us, do wear base layers / thermal top and leggings to go under your dry suit (we missed the memo, but we were still fine). Veronica was our guide and she was fab.

Jana was an amazing guide! I had never been snorkeling before and she helped me feel cool, calm and safe, all while hyping me up! The experience was unreal and so worth it. I highly recommend! Jana also took photos not only of us snorkeling but the views underwater, which was great to have some images to look back on.

Yana, our tour guide was the best, she was an inspiration and incredibly helpful. The prep was awful. You need to pay for enough vans so we can all get in our dry suits inside and not freeze BEFORE getting in cold water. Crazy.

Really great experience and glad we did it. Was -18C the day we went, was really cold outside but the water was similar temperature. The guides did everything to keep you as warm as possible and looked after you throughout. The cold didn’t put us off seeing the great views underwater and would recommend going

Wow! What an unbelievable experience. This is one of those wonders of the world things you don’t want to miss. Our guide Leo was awesome! We also were 2/4 so the group was small and personal (the other groups there had 10+ people and looked kind of chaotic. We were there in September and although it was cold you’re entirely dry other than your hands and head which are kept relatively warm considering it’s freezing water.

The. Best. Ever. Lu is the BEST GUIDE of all time.
