    What To Expect

    Your Ancient Rome tour starts near Oppian Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome, for a view of the Colosseum. Then walk down to the arena with your guide, and skip the main entrance line with your fast-track ticket. Inside, explore the Colosseum’s first and second tiers while listening to stories from your guide about the brutal events that were once held here, like executions and gory gladiator battles. As you stroll around the perimeter of the amphitheater, try to image the ancient crowd of up to 50,000 spectators who cheered as gladiators’ fates were decided by power-hungry emperors.

    Next, exit the Colosseum and walk over to the Roman Forum, once the political heart of the city. Get an up-close view of ancient remains like the House of the Vestal Virgins and the Temple of Julius Caesar, and then walk up Palatine Hill for another perspective of the ruins, including Circus Maximus, where chariot races once took place. Your tour ends here, from where you can continue exploring on your own.

    For a more thorough exploration of the Colosseum, in a smaller group format, select the upgrade option when booking for a tour that includes access to the arena floor —sections of the Colosseum that are not accessible to all ticket holders.

    This upgrade offers an exploration of the Arena Floor, which was the site of gladiatorial games, staged hunts featuring exotic animals, dramatic executions, and even simulated sea battles. You'll be amazed by the breathtaking view, have the opportunity to see the underground area where the spectacles were prepared, and get a glimpse of the location where the Emperor's box once stood. You’ll see more than most visitors do. Your tour ends with a visit to the Roman Forum, as described in the standard tour.

        Book early in the day if travelling in summer as the temperatures rise, and often little shade.
        be aware that it is very hot during the summer time, take lots of water.
        Highly recommended, and plan to stay in the Forum and Palatine Hill after the tour ends, so bring snacks and water!

        Fantastic guide. Very friendly and knowlegeable. Her array of photos enhanced the whole experience. Was very easy to book. Joining instructions were clear and tickets were available in the app. Lots of walking and stairs so check details before booking is essential. Recommended.

        WOW! We were not expecting to be given an tour by an archaeologist who was part of one of the digs in the Roman Forum. Clearly it was informative and so much to take in. The storytelling was engaging and brought it all to life. I'd definitely recommend this tour. There was no wait to get in with this tour when we went in November. The group size was just right, and we could hear clearly.

        Will never use Viator again. The bookings are third party so Viator takes no responsibility for any resolutions when things go wrong. Lost $600 on a booking that the third party refused to change due to severe weather conditions in Rome. I did not ask to cancel, only to rebook the next day or even later the same day once the weather improved. Viator response was to deal with the third party directly and that they could not do anything further.

        Our tour lasted 3 1/2 hours and the guide was very knowledgeable about all three locations. HIs knowledge of the Colosseum made us feel like we were there back in Roman times. He took the time in the perfect areas for pictures and gave us a chance to take it all in. One of the sites in Palatine Hill he actually work at during the dig. My only recommendation would be to try and keep it at 3 hours. While I was fine with it, there were many in our party that were restless towards the end and ready to move on to other things, thus the 4 out of 5 stars.

        S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G This was an amazing tour from start to finish. My guide was so kind and very knowledgable on all the locations visited. She was fun and personable as well. This was such a core memory moment standing where hundreds of thousands stood before me watching gladiators fight to the death and to see the amazing construction of building and monuments that were so old. Makes me wonder why we stopped putting that much heart and soul into building now like they did so long ago

        Silvia was an exceptional guide! Not only was she incredibly personable and animated, but she has her PhD in archeology and knew everything there was to know, even down to what the mortar was made of! She answered all our questions and provided visuals to help us envision what the ruins looked like centuries ago. This was the best way I could have seen these sites!

        It was amazing how much excavation needed to be done to uncover the old buildings. The doors for some buildings are high, due to excavation. I also enjoyed the information about how old materials had been "recycled" for more modern use.

        Great tour led by Silvia who shared excellent knowledge, and had continuous passion with her group throughout the tour. We would sign up for one of her tours every time in the future. At the end of the tour she shared a list of her places. I asked her for carbonara recommendation and she shared Osteria Nannarella which we visited today, and she was 100% correct.
