What To Expect

Located at San Francisco’s ever-popular Pier 39 along the Embarcadero, the Aquarium of the Bay offers an educational look at local sea life.

A general admission ticket gives access to all of the aquarium’s main exhibit areas, all of which focus on the marine life of San Francisco Bay and nearby waters. Together, the exhibits are home to more than 20,000 sea creatures. Stay all day if you wish. The aquarium is yours to explore at your own pace.

Discover the Bay Exhibit: Ever wonder why anchovies swim in schools, or what life is like for a newly hatched skate in San Francisco Bay? Learn answers to questions like these in the Discover the Bay exhibit area, which is also where you find some of the bay’s brightest sea creatures, including green moray eels and California’s state marine fish, the orange garibaldi.

Under the Bay Exhibit: Thousands of marine animals, including octopuses, swim above and around you as you meander along a 300-foot (90-meter) tunnel system of clear glass. See moon jellies and Pacific sea nettles, giant sea bass and colorful starfish, and deepwater fish such as leopard and soupfin sharks.

Over priced
Shalome_T, Apr 2024
I rate it a 3/5 it was cool but the tickets are overpriced, it was a quick & fast experience. Not too many sea animals to see.
I think it should be a little more for what you pay!

I liked being able to touch the stingray! It was nice walking through the water tunnel Learning about the different kinds of fish and sharks was pretty cool
Not worth the money

Not as good as we expected. Only small - we’d done it all in 45 minutes. Augmented reality section shut. Not many different species. I heard one mum ask if they had an octopus as her son loved them and they’d come to see one but they didn’t have any despite having a large painting mural of an octopus outside! Have other things like a squirrel, snakes, tortoises which have nothing to do with aquariums. We paid £106 for a family of 4. Waste of money and would not recommend.
Awesome experience

Very small but worth the experience very nice and clean and some employees are very attentive. Would do it again if we had more time
Lovely

Walking through the tunnel. The whole experience was great it great with interacting with the animals ❤️
Very small and very expensive for the size
Amelia_N, Sep 2023
This is an expensive aquarium for the size and number of exhibits. It’s also in an area of town that experience is a lot of heavy traffic, so it’s very hard to make your way down to Pier 39 and not feel rushed and pretty anxious the whole time. Once you do arrive, it takes 30 minutes to walk through the entire aquarium. And while there’s plenty to read about each exhibit, the number of exhibits just doesn’t reach the threshold of the usual museum at this price point.

Very beautiful animals! Super easy to directions I just wish they had more animals and blind friendly accommodations on each exhibit! The hands on tide pools were absolutely my favorite! Everyone was so friendly!

The Sharks of Alcatraz tunnel was so fun, I had to go through it twice. The jellies were beautiful. When I got to the river otters, there were only two and they were sleeping.

Poorly managed and overrated aquarium! One of the visitor tunnel was closed and under construction ( but didn’t mention in ticketing process) ! Elevator carrying visitors were confusing and so many people were just randomly moving up and down ! If you live in Bay Area and just want to hang out with your kids in weekend then this might be an option for you but definitely not for foreign or inter- domestic travelers having limited time and want to cover up other important places !

Able to touch the baby sharks, stingray and starfish. Loved the underground fish/shark tank! Very informative about each animal/fish.
Great for babies and toddlers!
Melissa_S, Nov 2022
An affordable family experience. The environments provided for the animals are all close to their natural spaces.
Too expensive.
Richard_P, Nov 2022
Kinda pricey for the size of the aquarium, was expecting a bit more. We had fun anyway. Probably won't go again at that price.
