Civita di Bagnoregio

Civita di Bagnoregio, Viterbo

The basics

Built by the Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago, Civita di Bagnoregio boasts a fascinating history and, thanks to its remote location, a wealth of well-preserved medieval buildings; however, due to the constant erosion of the mountainside, its days are numbered. Most permanent residents have moved elsewhere, but you can still stroll the romantic streets and enjoy stunning panoramas of the countryside.

Visit Civita di Bagnoregio on a day trip from Rome or shore excursion from the Civitavecchia cruise port. Most tours include transportation and a guided walk, highlighting the town’s unique history and spectacular views.

Memorable Excursion
Salvatore was an excellent driver. He was very informative about Civita di Bagnoregio and the duomo in Orvieto. He was kind enough to make us lunch reservations at a wonderful restaurant.

When to get there

The sleepy town is always open for business, but springs to life in the summer as part-time residents return to welcome the peak tourist season. Try to arrive early in the day, as the parking lot fills up and the town becomes crowded with camera-toting visitors by midday.

A Day Trip to Orvieto

Less than an hour drive separates Civita di Bagnoregio and Orvieto, so the two can easily be visited on a day trip from Rome or shore excursion from the Civitavecchia cruise terminal. In Orvieto, explore an underground network of tunnels and cellars carved into the city's rocky foundation, descend more than 200 steps into St. Patrick’s Well, and admire three centuries worth of mosaics and frescoes at the Italian-Gothic Orvieto Cathedral.
