Using Salalah as a jumping-off point, travelers can visit the area's lively souks, coconut-lined beaches, and banana plantations. There’s also the Al Balid Archeological Park, where you can explore the ruins of centuries-old mosques.
Head northeast from Salalah to see the natural surroundings, including lush hills and waterfall-rich valleys found in Wadi Darbat. Alternatively, head east along the coast to Mirbat for its historical mud-brick ruins and old fortress. To experience the golden sand dunes most commonly associated with the Arab world, be sure to check out the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) Desert.
For many itineraries, the best way to go is to fly into Muscat International Airport in Oman’s capital city before flying to Salalah International Airport.
The best time to visit Dhofar is unequivocally during khareef, from late June to early September. Not only does the landscape transform into a subtropical oasis, but the region’s typically soaring temperatures cool down significantly. There is also the Salalah Tourism Festival, which runs for more than a month during this time frame.
Dhofar has an incredible collection of historical and cultural sites that you can easily explore during your visit, but you shouldn’t forget about the Land of Frankincense. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the attraction was once a highly trafficked thoroughfare along the ancient Incense Road during medieval times.
