The basics

Sitting on a remote hillock overlooking the surrounding undulating plains, Castel del Monte is regarded as a masterpiece of medieval architecture, taking its influences from both classical and Islamic building styles.

To best appreciate its unique history and design, visit with a guide on a day trip from Bari or Ostuni, or join a single or multi-day tour of Puglia’s highlights to see the fortress along with sights like the trulli in Alberobello, Bari’s historic center, the pretty village of Trani, and the Sassi di Matera in neighboring Basilicata. Some itineraries include lunch and wine tastings, so gourmands can enjoy Puglia’s excellent food and wine.

Federico II’s Architectural Masterpiece

When Castel del Monte was built, Federico II’s realm stretched across southern Italy and Sicily. The exact use of the castle is still debated, but its architecture is considered among the empire’s most remarkable. Perfectly octagonal, it is constructed around a courtyard with a series of octagonal towers. Internally, it rises two stories with eight rooms on each, and although the furnishings and much decoration are gone, the marble moldings around the great entrance remain.
