The Basics

RioZoo is currently undergoing major renovations, during which time limited parts of the zoo are open. Upon completion, visitors will be able to enjoy full access to the zoo including the Elephant Aquarium, boat cruises along the river, a tree-top bird-watching circuit, and the bear, tiger, and monkey enclosures. Zookeeper talks and demonstrations allow animal lovers to gain insight into the different species, while the Little Farm (Fazendinha) offers the chance to interact with farm animals under the supervision of staff. Quinta da Boa Vista Park

RioZoo is the star attraction of Quinta da Boa Vista Park, the largest green space in North Rio, and it’s worth leaving some time to explore the park after your zoo visit. Laid out in the 19th century, the park originally served as the imperial gardens of São Cristóvão Palace. Today, the grand neoclassical palace is home to the National Museum of Brazil (currently closed while undergoing restoration after a devastating 2018 fire), while the surrounding park boasts palm-lined walking trails, lakes, and ample picnic spots.
