3 Days in Krabi for First Timers

Curated by Margot Biggwho's spent plenty of time swimming, rock climbing, and relaxing in and around Krabi.

Although I had done indoor rock climbing once or twice at a gym with friends, I never took much interest in climbing until I visited Krabi. After seeing people scaling the crags around Railay Beach, I had a “when in Krabi” moment and decided to give it a go. Rock climbing soon became one of my favorite outdoor activities. While I think Krabi is a great place to climb, there’s certainly more to do in and around town, from swimming in crystalline waters to learning how to cook Thai cuisine. Here’s how I’d suggest making the most of a 3-day trip to Krabi.

Expect serious rain if you come between June and October—but way fewer crowds than in the busy winter high season.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a swim (or climb) at Railay Beach.

Day 1

Start your stay in Krabi with a visit to Railay Beach, celebrated for its beautiful white sands, crystalline waters, and rock-climbing opportunities. Getting to Krabi Town or Ao Nang Beach is easy by longtail boat. The area is also a popular spot for rock climbing and is a great place to take a beginner-friendly climbing class.

Head out in the early evening aboard a catamaran cruise along the coastline—opt for one that will take you past Chicken Island, named as such because it resembles a chicken's head.

Day 2

Spend any time in Krabi and you're sure to hear about Koh Tapu, nicknamed James Bond Island, as it featured in The Man with the Golden Gun. You can see the island for yourself, along with regional attractions such as the Panyee floating village and Raman Waterfalls on a full-day tour of Phang Nga Bay.

In the evening, try your hand at Thai cooking by enrolling in a small-group cooking class. You'll learn to make four different Thai dishes, with choices including curries, stir-fries, and salads.

Day 3

By your third day, you'll have already spent time at beaches and on the water, so explore inland destinations. Worthwhile spots include the Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot), a beautiful swimming hole in the middle of the jungle, and Namtok Ron, a famous hot springs waterfall.

In the evening, take one final swim. Koh Raeng, accessible by boat, is a great choice if you want to swim under the glow of bioluminescent plankton.
