The basics

Built in Italy during the early 20th century, the Battleship Georgios Averof served in the First Balkan War, played a major part in both world wars, and patrolled the Indian Ocean as the flagship of the Greek fleet before being taken out of combat in 1952. Today, the ship is a highlight of walking and e-bike tours along the coastline from Athens to Cape Sounion.

Take in the pretty Flisvos Marina with its bobbing yachts and sailboats from land, admiring the hulking form of the battleship from outside, or choose a naval history tour that includes a visit to the ship’s interiors to see uniforms, weaponry, navigational charts, medals, and images of the ship in mid-battle. Kids tend to enjoy exploring this massive ship, and many family-friendly tours stop here for an up-close look.
