The lake is a “perched lake” that sits atop a sand dune, above the water table, which means it is pure rainwater. This unique environment makes it unsuitable for plant or fish life, leaving the water pure and free of waste. The sand surrounding the lake is pure silica so you can wash your hair with it or exfoliate your skin: perfect if you’ve been camping for days. There are several picnic areas and beaches around the lake, making it an attractive place to stay a while.

Fraser Island is accessible by 4WD vehicle only (permits are required). If coming from the southern tip of Fraser Island, where the ferry docks, drive up 75 Mile Beach, which runs the length of Fraser Island’s east coast. Follow the beach to Eurong Beach Resort then head inland on the 1-way road towards Central Station and follow signs to Lake McKenzie. If you don’t have your own 4WD, book a tour.
You can visit any time of day, all year round but, to get ahead of the crowds, try to arrive as early in the morning as possible. As an added bonus, the low light of sunrise brings out the colors of the lake.
On the way to or from Lake McKenzie, Central Station merits a stop. Originally established as a forestry camp, it now offers the chance to explore the rain forest and learn about the development of the island and its various flora and fauna. Here you’ll find an information center, picnic area, camping facilities, and a scenic boardwalk through the rain forest along the banks of the Wanggoolba Creek.
