The Pinnacles display the evolution and growth of Fraser Island, as well as the history of the island’s first peoples. The Pinnacles is a sacred site for the Butchulla people, the first inhabitants of K'gari (Fraser Island). Visiting as part of a guided tour offers the opportunity to learn how the colored sand formations were created and the Butchulla legends surrounding them. Day tours to Fraser Island often include visits to the Pinnacles between such other attractions as Central Station and Eli Creek—taking a tour that departs from the mainland is the best bet for those without 4WD vehicles.
The Pinnacles is located on 75 Mile Beach, between the Indian Head lookout and the SS Maheno shipwreck. From the parking area, it’s a short walk up a pathway to the Pinnacles. Fraser Island is accessible by 4WD vehicle only (permits are required). Unless you have your own, a tour is your easiest option.
You can visit at any time of day, all year round, but the best time to visit is in the early morning, when the sunlight enhances the multiple colors of the cliffs as it rises. You don’t need to dedicate much time to enjoy the Pinnacles; most people only stay around 10 minutes.
Continuing around 12 milles (19 kilometers) north along 75 Mile Beach, which stretches for 75 miles (120 kilometers) along Fraser Island’s eastern coast, you’ll come to Indian Head. This rocky outcrop is Fraser Island’s most easterly point and offers excellent ocean views. You might also spot manta rays, sharks, and, between July and November, migrating humpback whales.
