Almost all Fraser Island tours visit 75 Mile Beach and many of the island’s most popular attractions are located on or around the beach. Starting from the south, drive north along the sandy tracks, stopping to admire the dunes of Hammerstone Sandblow, take a dip at Eli Creek, and see the Maheno Shipwreck marooned on the shore. At the north end of the island, the Champagne Pools are a scenic swimming spot, the colored cliffs of the Pinnacles make for some pretty photos, and Indian Head offers an impressive view along the beach and across the ocean.
75 Mile Beach is located on the east coast of Fraser Island and due to the island’s sandy roads, can only be reached by 4WD. Ferries to Fraser Island run from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach, from where it’s a short drive to the south end of the beach. Many travelers opt to join a day tour to the island, setting out from Hervey Bay, Noosa, or Rainbow Beach.
It’s possible to visit the beach year round, but be sure to check tide times before setting out as driving along the beach is only possible at low tide. Head there in winter (June to October) for a chance to spot humpback whales on their annual migration.
