One of the most important public spaces in Prague, Republic Square (Námestí Republiky) figures in many sightseeing and food tours of the city. How to get there

Republic Square can be reached on foot from a number of top sights and attractions around the city. To reach the square by metro, take Line B to Náměstí Republiky. The square can also be reached by tram, with good connections from Holešovice and Prague 8.

When to get there

During the day, the square is a popular sightseeing and shopping destination; at night, the cafés and restaurants attract city residents and visitors alike out for an evening on the town. The farmers market is held from Monday to Friday, and there is a charming Christmas market in the square during the month of December.

Highlights in the Republic Square

This busy square is home to a number of the city’s architectural gems, including the Municipal House, Prague’s foremost Art Nouveau building, and one of the most beautiful in Europe. Inside, there is an upscale French restaurant, a traditional Czech restaurant, an elegant café, the first American bar in the Czech Republic, and several concert venues. Adjacent, the 15th-century Powder Gate was one of the 13 original city gates into the city’s Staré Město. Other notable buildings include the stern Czech National Bank, renovated Hybernia Theater, and Palladium shopping center located in a former Franciscan monastery.
