One of the most important public spaces in Prague, Republic Square (Námestí Republiky) figures in many sightseeing and food tours of the city. The farmers market is held from Monday to Friday, and there is a charming Christmas market in the square during the month of December.
This busy square is home to a number of the city’s architectural gems, including the Municipal House, Prague’s foremost Art Nouveau building, and one of the most beautiful in Europe. Inside, there is an upscale French restaurant, a traditional Czech restaurant, an elegant café, the first American bar in the Czech Republic, and several concert venues. Adjacent, the 15th-century Powder Gate was one of the 13 original city gates into the city’s Staré Město. Other notable buildings include the stern Czech National Bank, renovated Hybernia Theater, and Palladium shopping center located in a former Franciscan monastery.
