Don't-Miss Dishes in Hawaii

Don't-Miss Dishes in Hawaii
Hi, I'm Juniper!

Juniper is a freelance journalist, white-water rafting guide, former newspaper reporter, and lifelong outdoor adventure seeker.

One of the highlights of the island paradise is its rich array of foods, from both traditional ingredients and from diverse influences brought to Hawaii by immigrants from across the Pacific. From Japanese-influenced delicacies to unique Hawaiian favorites, here are a few of the foods you must try while in Hawaii.

Kalua Pork

The best way to try authentic kalua pork is to head to a traditional Hawaiian luau. That’s because the meat’s signature melt-in-your-mouth texture and smokey flavor come from slow cooking a pig in an underground oven—a method that's tough to replicate anywhere else.

This starchy porridge-like dish doesn't please everyone's taste buds, but the traditional Hawaiian staple made from taro root is integral to the Hawaiian cultural experience. It’s offered at most luaus, allowing you to try it alongside a host of other traditional dishes.

Poke

Poke (pronounced poh-keh) is a Hawaiian spin on Japanese sashimi. The dish, raw seafood on a bed of rice with other toppings, has become an independent hit outside of the islands. Still, it is hard to beat the freshness of poke served on a sunset dinner cruise or prepared in a cooking class.

Shave Ice

Few things are more refreshing on a warm tropical day than shave ice, which explains why it's served everywhere from corner stands to restaurants. Hawaiians take pride in their shave (not shaved) ice, serving cones, cups, and bowls that include colorful tropical fruit mixtures likely more elaborate than anything you've encountered off the island.

Macadamia-Nut Everything

You might not think of macadamia nuts as a “dish,” but in Hawaii they are not only a signature snack or chocolate-covered treat, they are also incorporated into meals, desserts, dressings, and more. Try macadamia nut soup, hummus, or pancakes, and for dessert don’t miss the macadamia nut cream pie.

Coffee

When in Hawaii, you don't want to miss a chance to try coffee from the source, while learning about the rich plantation history and coffee culture on the islands. Most tours let you watch harvesting, roasting, and brewing, plus you usually get to sample a variety of coffee.
