Scenic Rail Tour without Skyrail

The hundred year old train itself was an experience. Learning about its history was interesting. Seeing some waterfalls was lovely. The only Disappointing thing was I hadn’t seen the tour online that included the skyrail, Which we are so sorry we missed. I feel the tour operator could’ve contacted us to let us know about this addition or even when he dropped off the other passengers, he could’ve asked us if we wanted to get off and buy tickets there. We were thinking we would still have the option to go on that after the train.. not realising the train was at the end of the day and we would’ve had to get the sky rail up there and the train back.

Picked up at hotel. Get in the van and relax. Your taken to the Sky Rail 'station' and dropped of with tickets for the journey or you are driven up the rather spectacular winding road to the Kuranda village. Its a small, compact, hippy, tie dye and crystals sort of place with lots of restaurants that you have ample free time to explore on your own. The star of the show is the train ride back down to Clearwater Rail Station where your picked up by your guide outside train carriage 7 - under the wooden roofing - your guide, Michael, then takes you right back to your hotel.

Great way to get to Kuranda with commentary from Michael the driver. 3 hours to explore. Great town. Train trip back was great in the old carriages and scenic views and commentary.

Thanks for the review Michael. Did you enjoy my commentary about Cairns, Kuranda, the Atherton Tablelands etc when you were in my late model air conditioned bus for one hour on the way to Kuranda? The other 5 passengers in the bus did! I provide additional commentary on the afternoons journey from Freshwater Station to hotels as well, other companies shuttle buses may not offer this additional service.

Our tour guide Michael was super knowledgeable of the area and gave us a nice tour on the way to Kuranda. I recommend to go to the Koala Gardens where you can take a picture holding the Koala and get to feed Kangaroos! The markets are nice to see, and the railway ride back is a nice experience.

A lot to do at Kuranda

The butterfly sanctuary experience was amazing. I enjoyed seeing the butterflies up closed and personal. They even landed on my hand a couple of times. Patience and gentleness are needed to get some good shots. The amount and variety of shops in the Kuranda village are ample. I managed to find some beautiful gifts for my friends. I got a good few hours but still was not enough to browse all the shops and stores! The scenic train is nostalgic inside with stunning views outside. I visited at dry season so the waterfall was not as spectacular. I will make sure to go back next time in wet season and do the sky rail as well.
