What To Expect

Meet your private driver at your hotel or another central location of your choice in Amman, and venture into northern Jordan toward Jerash.

One of the world’s best-preserved classical sites, Jerash was a prosperous Greek and Roman city. Founded by Alexander the Great around 331 BC, the city—then called Gerasa—reached its peak after the Roman conquest in 63 BC, later becoming one of the 10 great Decapolis cities of the east.

Arrive at the gate and choose to explore independently or hire a local guide (own expense). Then, head inside (own expense) to inspect the timeworn streets, plazas, bathhouses, and other remains. See highlights like the 2nd-century Hadrian's Arch and 15,000-seater Hippodrome arena, and admire the Oval Colonnade, Temple of Artemis, and Colonnaded Street.

Then, travel to nearby Ajloun Castle, a 12th-century fortress built by the forces of Saladin to defend against Crusader incursions. The hilltop edifice is a stunning example of medieval Arab-Islamic military architecture and was built to dominate three major passages into northwest Jordan. Go inside (own expense) and look around the towers, corridors, and small museum, absorbing the historical atmosphere and scenic views.

Re-join your driver and continue further north to Umm Qais, where the remnants of another Roman Decapolis city known as Gadara cover a hillside.

Drink in the views from the hill to the Golan Heights, Lake Tiberius, and Jordan Valley, and opt to explore independently or take a locally guided tour (own expense). View the Greco-Roman remains, seeing highlights such as the mausoleum, basilica terrace, and theaters.

Finally, reconvene with your driver and return to Amman, where your tour ends with a drop-off at any central location of your choosing.

An unforgettable day!!!
Alan_H, Mar 2024
Our driver Mohammad Bardaghawi delivered a truly excellent overall experience. Our full day tour included three different sights, Umm Qais, Ajloun and Jarash. Mohammad ensured we had multiple opportunities to explore the local culture along our route. Always giving us ample time to enjoy the sights, rest stops and our day. The guide he arranged for our walking tour at Jarash was simply outstanding. The guides knowledge and passion for the site was incredible. We heartily recommend this full-day tour with Viator.
Day tripping north
JooTim_O, Nov 2023
Great day trip with Hosam again but this time North which was great and different. It is more mountainous and has more trees and greenery . The sites were very interesting especially Umm Qais which overlooks Golan Heights and West Bank. The architecture of Aljoun castle and Jerash ruins was spectacular Hosam was very helpful to recommend places to eat and also what to do in each place All in all a great trip

We had a spectacular day exploring the sites and history at Umm Qais, Ajloun, and Jerash with Samer.

Decent locations but a bit rushed - stated timings are misleading
Jack_E, May 2023
First things first, our driver, Saed, was friendly, knowledgable and punctual. He provided information on the areas we drove through and was happy to answer our questions on many aspects of Jordanian life. The three locations themselves were good; admittedly we'd been a bit spoilt by what we'd seen on our trip already, and nothing here compared to Petra or Wadi Rum, but they were still worth a visit (especially Jerash). The problem was more to do with the time we had at these locations, which was at odds with what the website suggested. The website gave us a choice of start time: 8am, 9am or 10am. Having had lots of early starts on our trip, we opted for 10am, and selected our pickup location in central Amman from the drop-down menu. After booking, Saed got in touch saying that we should start at 8am as we wouldn't have enough time to see everything otherwise. We were confused, but compromised on 9am. The website suggested the whole tour would take 6-8 hours, with 45 minutes at Umm Qais and Ajloun. As it happened we were back home at 5:30, 8.5 hours after setting off, and that still only allowed us 30 minutes at Ajloun and 25 at Umm Qais (we got the full 2 hours at Jerash). Obviously I understand that timings are estimates and that traffic plays a part, but I don't see how it would ever be possible to see all 3 sites in 6 hours. Even 8 hours seems unlikely to allow the full time at each location. For us, our time at the first two locations felt a bit too rushed (particularly Umm Qais, where it wasn't obvious where to go or what to prioritise seeing in our short timeframe). In hindsight it would've been better to give Umm Qais a miss and spend more time elsewhere, particularly as it was the least impressive of the three (admittedly this wasn't helped by some uncharacteristically damp weather on the day). Ultimately we still enjoyed our time with Saed and got a taste of some of the highlights of northern Jordan. However, we would have enjoyed it more if the website gave a more accurate impression of the timings involved (and if it's impossible to start at 9 or 10am and complete the advertised itinerary, why were we given these options?)

Lots to see. History Abounds.

Jerash is by far the highlight of the three stops. It has some spectacular ruins and impressive scenery. Aljoun is a neat castle with a great view.

Great day trip from Amman

Hassan, my driver for the day was superb. He was prompt, kind and considerate - which left plenty of time to explore the three fantastic stops! Would highly recommend.

An unforgettable experience!
CARMELO_D, Feb 2023
An authentic experience at its best! Our tour guide, Hani, came picked up punctually from our hotel. Having studied Middle-Eastern history, he gave us lots of useful information along our way on the three main sites visited. The visits were exceptional and all three sites are a must if one is to visit Jordan. We also stopped to eat in an amazing restaurant in Jerash (the Artemis restaurant). All in all, an amazing day exploring the ruins from the Roman and Umayyad times in northern Jordan - thank you for such an incredible experience!
The trip from hell!

DO NOT book any tours with: R&H VIP Transportation Services & Car Rental in Amman, Jordan. What was supposed to be a fun and enjoyable trip in Jordan for my wife and me was the worst road trip caused by the R&H VIP Transportation Services driver. 1. Driver woke us up at midnight in the hotel just to let us know he would pick us up at 8am, which was btw already the scheduled time! What a total unprofessional behaviour! 2. He got us lost 3 times, in peoples backyard or driveways in Jordan and blamed it on the GPS that constantly told him to turn around which he ignored!!! When we kindly asked him to ask for directions, he started to argue. 3. To make up for lost time he started to speed and jumped over speed bumps in local villages to have us fly around in the backseat! 4. His rear shock absorbers of the dirty car he used were broken! 5. He started to text with both hands on the freeway only to have his car move left and right on the road and off the road! 6. My wife and I are seasoned drivers, but we were scared! Unbelievable that R&H VIP Transportation Services & Car Rental provides such a horrible service and shame on Viator for using this horrible service! 7. R&H VIP Transportation Services & Car Rental has NOT responded to our complaint!
Great day trip in Northern Jordan
Anthony_H, Jan 2023
Great one day tour of historical areas around Amman. We arranged a guide only at Jerash and that was more than adequate. A guide did add to the experience at Jerash, which is quite large with a lot to see. Yousef was an excellent driver, very personable, professional and took great care of us. We had difficulty finding an ATM that could connect to our bank. Yousef went out of his way to help us to find an ATM. We highly recommend this tour.

Jerash and Nothern Jordan - superb day trip
Teresa_F, Jun 2022
Fantastic tour of Jerash and Nth Jordan. Our tour guide was Hakam Zatayma and he was superb. so knowledgeable and very personable. His English is excellent, as we speak no Arabic! He made the day a real treat with his passion for the area. Thank you Hakam. Our driver for the day was Hassan Al-khateb, and he was very good. He included some lovely personal touches - stopping for local coffees, purchasing local food for us for lunch/snacks. All totally unexpected, but very much appreciated. Thank you Hassan.
Amazing experience to sites with Hassan
Matthew_W, Oct 2021
I reserved a day long journey from Amman to Jerash, Umm Qais, and Aljoun. Hassan Al-Khateb easily coordinated my trip with him the day before and we met on our journey on time! The car was spacious and luxurious and Hassan’s customer service is next level. If there was anything I wanted catered on my trip, Hassan listened with an open ear and provided solid recommendations to make the day as worthwhile and special as possible. The trip itself was exceptional and I was able to see numerous landscapes and views of Jordan between destinations. Hassan was incredibly friendly, customer-oriented, and fun - I would recommend any journey with him wholeheartedly.

Amer, the best!
Francisco_A, Aug 2021
We booked transportation only since we wanted to go relax, nice and slowly. Amer, was kind, patient and always ready to give a hint or recommendation about the sites we visited. There was not even a single offer made by him to push for a place, restaurant or guide which was great, 5/5. Great driver, we felt safe the whole trip.

This place is something....
Stefanie_C, Aug 2021
This place is something. Jerash is way underrated. If you like ruins or ancient history, this is up your ally. Really cool place. When it says take 3 hours....do it....and bring a lot of water. The castle was neat, not an all day affair but neat. We didn't go to the last place because of time, but the driver did offer to bring us....that was on us not him. Our driver was awesome....really cool guy and doesn't smoke in front of you all day. I respect that a lot because it smells clean and he puts you first. Mo was his name for short. Just an awesome guy who deserves the work. He works hard. I had a moment where I wasn't paying attention and ran into a door....super embarising and not something I've ever done before. I'm usually really good about looking where I'm going. He didn't make fun of me and instead made sure I was okay. That's the kind of guy you want for your tour. He also really cares about his family and some of his stories will melt you. That is part of the overall experience you know? Good time on this journey.

The driver was friendly as expected and took us wherever we wanted to go. He was very accommodating. The only thing I didn't like which you need to look out for on most of these types of yours is them trying to get you to go to a tourist trap restaurant and souvenir shop. We were able to tell him no for the shop because we knew what to expect (they take you there and get a cut when you buy something which is overpriced). We tried and failed to avoid the restaurant. He kept trying to take us to a place he "recommends" and we wanted a buffet so he ended taking us to an overly priced tourist buffet. Basically it's nothing but tourists, overpriced, and they get a cut. Said we had those two options but it's not included in the tour so yeah. Just be smart and firm when dealing with drivers and guides.
Response from Host, Feb 2020
the tour guide or the driver is always offering a recommended place to eat because not every restaurant near to the site is good, and all shops and restaurants near to a tourist site it is a tourist shop or restaurant and they are over priced a bit like any place in the world

Private drivers are the way to go. You get to see each location at your own pace, and in between locations get to engage in conversation with the english-speaking driver.

Driver was great - maybe make some schedule adjustments
Tory_M, Nov 2019
Our driver for this tour was great and really flexible - he allowed us to stay at each site as long as we wanted. Umm Qais itself, though, was laid out strangely and it was hard to find the entrance once you're inside the site. Probably skippable. That said, Ajloun and Jerash were both fantastic and highly recommended. Having a friendly driver with good English was a very easy way to get around.
