One of the best hikes I have done!
Jennie_H, Apr 2024
Great tour from start to finish. Briefing the day before was very clear, we could rent all of the equipment, and then the hike itself was fantastic. The guides paced it well and the hike was the right amount of challenging. The hike up Fuego is a must if you have the legs - views from the top are amazing. Would highly recommend this.
If you love adventure, this is a MUST! My highlight of Guate
Maribel_P, Apr 2024
This was the highlight of my trip, and that says a lot bc being in Antigua for Semana Santa was already incredible. Don’t get me wrong, this was extremely challenging, especially the hike to Fuego. But it was all worth it because how often does one get to hike an active volcano. I read reviews so I knew what to expect. I made sure I took the right gear and started doing practiced hikes before I went. If the strenuous hike doesn’t get you, the elevation might so be prepared. OX Expeditions was an incredible company to do this with. They had friendly staff. The meeting before the hike really helped to prepare us and we even got to borrow supplies for the hike like backpacks, sleeping bag liners and such. Chino was our head guide and I thought he was fantastic. He is very observant and adjusts accordingly. He was very patient with me during the hike down Fuego at night. He stayed back with me the whole time and it was what I needed. He paced us and we had a break after every 30 minutes on the way up. This really made the spike in elevation easier to adjust. This was a 10/10. A must!!
Book with OX for your bucketlist Acetenango experience!

We had an amazing experience with OX expeditions, our guides Sergio & Chino took excellent care of us, we felt safe and they kept our spirits high and encouraged us even at times when the hike felt difficult. The pre-hike meeting the day before was very helpful to get an idea of what the hike would be like. The food was nice, especially traditional breakfast on the first day. From our cabins we could watch Fuego erupt all night, most other companies did not have this from what I heard (i.e stayed in tents inside a shed etc. so only get the view from outside). If you have not booked to do Fuego you can decide on the day if you have enough energy and pay when you return to Angtigua, you should do it if you can!! I would definitely recommend OX for a trip to Acetenango, they have the best rep for a reason!
A must!

Could not recommend this tour any more, everything was amazing. Definitely would go with Ox expeditions again, company were great from start to finish. Saw some other companies that were not as good, losing some of their group, people not with the correct gear. With Ox they make sure you have everything. Don’t go with anyone else
Definitely worth the hard work
Darvin_S, Mar 2024
I am an intermediate level hiker and this was one of the hardest hikes I’ve ever done. Don’t let that discourage you though because it’s totally doable. Be prepared for hard work immediately out of the gates. It gets easier near the end. I didn’t do Fuego or the summit but the view from base was amazing. I decided to save my energy for the decent which was a good idea because sleep is not comfortable. The volcano burps through the night. We were in a group of 30 and after seeing the group come back from Fuego I decide that I made the right decision. The view from base is absolutely perfect.
Don't pass this tour up!!!

I make a huge effort when traveling to experience our earth in as many ways as possibles. I've seen and hiked volcanos before but nothing like Acantenango and Fuego's ridge!!! This was one of the most remarkable experiences in my life. The hike was long but doable for people of all ages and fitness levels!! Remember your elevation meds tho! I'll for sure do this hike again in my life and with OX of course! They were great. The cabins were a great choice and kept us a bit warmer. We got lucky that it didn't rain. If it did, we'd be safe in the cabins while we slept. Sergio and Rolando were with our group and they were great helping people stay motivated, safe, and comfrotable. This experience was out of this world. Can't recommend it enough!
Amazing experience with OX Expedition

Tour guides were excellent with the pace as everyone had different fitness level. Hike to base camp is challenging but worth the effort.
A must do!
Cassie_G, Feb 2024
This tour was absolutely incredible from start to finish. The guides were so kind and helpful, and made sure everyone was safe and happy. The hike was challenging, but they provided all the gear and information necessary to make it doable. The view from the campsite and from the optional Fuego hike were amazing, and it should not be missed. The provided food was very good, and the cabins were excellent, with views of the volcano.
Loved it!
Elise_V, Feb 2024
Loved the guides and the overall experience. OX was super prepared with everything we needed. Thank you!

Very well run, informative, challenging and worthwhile trip. Would recommend for anyone wanting to do Acatenango.
Amazing experience
Athina_K, Jan 2024
Second time hiking to Acatenango but this time my experience was way better than the first one. OX and our 4 guides were organized above my expectations. The hike up to Acatenango is difficult but doable. The hike to Fuego volcano is more intense but totally worth trying. Big thanks to all 4 guides and the team of OX ❤️
Fantastic, well paced hike
Mark_K, Jan 2024
Great hikes (I did additionally Fuego for a bit of extra cash) with a great guide; this hike is definitely challenging due to altitude, but otherwise very enjoyable in a group, and OX's Basecamp is even comfortable to spend the night at (with a spectacular view of the volcano, of course) Gerrit was very attentive, made sure that the group gets enough information at any point in time to gage expectations. The breaks were well planned, he also explained a lot about conditions, the geology of the volcano, comparison with other peaks, and in general, nice conversations about previous hiking / climbing experiences. Face mask / beanie is a must. Bring two. During dry season the ash/dust is way too much, you don't want to breath all that in. Also slippery downhill, make sure you learn the techniques how to climb down.
Book somewhere else
Dionne_d, Jan 2024
Everything was taken care of. However, you can do the exact same tour or tours with other companies for half the money. It also doesnt say it does not include a hike to fuego volcano which is another 40 euro's per person extra. Definately a must do, but book with something else.
Amazing Hike w/ Incredible Views
Andrew_S, Jan 2024
This hike is absolutely amazing. The view is incredible and witnessing an active volcano this close is likely a once in a lifetime opportunity for many travelers. The hike is no joke, particularly if you opt for Fuego add-on and to summit in the morning. Between the elevation, steep inclines, and loose footing, it is difficult but worth it in the end. You can borrow almost all equipment which is nice, but heavily recommend coming prepared with hiking boots with good grip (those in trainers fell a lot more often).
Difficult, but great hike!
Mari_S, Jan 2024
More difficult hike than I anticipated, but worth it. OX expeditions did a great job in leading the trip. They made sure the whole group was taken care of!
Fantastic experience with...
Sue_C, Jan 2024
Fantastic experience with Ox Expedition. Friendly and helpful staff. Great happy hours. Camp overlooks Fuego; great photo angles. The eruptions shook us awake a couple times throughout the night, which was so exciting. Option to hike up Fuego for $40. You can decide if your body is ready for it after you get to the base camp.
Amazing experience
Danilo_A, Dec 2023
The agency was very informative the whole time They provide equipment for the hike The hide was great, experienced Recommended
Oh Fuego!
Brittany_B, Dec 2023
The trek is hard, seriously hard. One of the girls had given birth naturally three times and said this was way harder, but we made it. I'm in my mid 40s and pretty active, but my preparation for the hike included walking around the neighborhood and watching some YouTube videos. This got me to the top, but I should have put in a little more prep work. The weather didn't cooperate with us, so we didn't get to see anything when we hiked Fuego. I was really concerned about the sleeping conditions and weather, but the cabins were warmer than expected. I started in warm pjs, gloves and wool socks, but that got too warm, and I had to lose the gloves and socks. Take advantage of the porters. They recommended 4 liters of water per person, but we only went through half of that. The beginning is the hardest because you're carrying the most weight with water, food and extra layers of clothes. Your calves will be sore for a few days but so worth it. It also might take a few days for realization to sink in that you hiked up 2 volcanoes, but it's great feeling when it fully hits you. I wouldn't do it again, but so glad that I did it once. You'll be glad too!
Fuego and summit
Teresa_G, Nov 2023
My family meme we made it to fuego and the summit. I did not - there could have been more guides for the number of participants people - to slower ones could have had the option to leave sooner to get there at the same time as the others - even the last morning - I came in last but had I left 45 minutes earlier I would of been a lot less stressed - I barely had time to rest at the stops - the guide just kept saying vamps - no words of encouragement - even though I arrived last it was still in the limits that had Ben set to arrive but very end of!!
Fantastic experience, great value
Venkat_I, Nov 2023
Great experience overall.. Very well organized. The information shared upfront was very helpful and the guides including Chino did a great job of making sure everyone had the best possible experience. It is one of the toughest hikes I have ever been on but if you can tough it out for 8 hours, you will thoroughly enjoy the end result. OX Expeditions is a great company and I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to go on this tour.
