Everything we wanted from a tour with good variety of food. Guide was friendly and knew a lot about the history of the food, Budapest and Hungary. Would highly recommend.

Operator is a scam artist. did not perform, lied, then took us to a very unsafe area and we fled for our lives.
      Alan_S, May 2024
Unsafe - The supposed operator is running a scam. The 3 groups of us met by a bank. guide said he could not do the tour but would take us to the home of the company owner for a feast, no bars/restaurants. then went on train and another 20 minute walk in a very unsafe area. 5 tables, no silverware, no table cloths. served cold soup. he was operating it out of a youth hostile surrounded by barb wire. no one else there to help. we tried to leave but we were locked in. finally got out and had to take 4 taxis home. We didn't know if they were going to rob us or rape us, seriously dangerous.
      Extremely Disappointing Experience.

What was advertised and what was delivered were two completely different things. What was supposed to happen was we were going to be taken to local restaurants in Budapest to try their "street food" but because it was May 1st and a European holiday that many of the restaurants we were going to would be too crowded. So, the alternative was to host us at his "home" without any additional details. We then walked to the subway and after several stops, got off and started walking into at first a business area that led us across fields and through overgrown and deserted parking lots and after a while into a neighborhood. Our host said nothing to manage our expectations. At this time, my wife (who grew up in NYC and is "street smart" called our son in Oregon and tried to drop a pin on our location). Several of the other women began to wonder what was going on as well. When we arrived, it was to a house with a locked gated and a backyard with a fence with barb wire across the top. The backyard was overgrown and there were a series of tables pushed together and mis-matched chairs. Our host disappeared into the kitchen and did not reappear for almost half an hour. During this time it was clear that something was "off" and we also found the backyard was infested with mosquitoes. When our host finally did arrive, it was with mismatched bowls of a cold cherry soup with clearly spray cool whip. It was fine but then he disappeared again. During this time, several of the guests went to use the bathroom and reported back that it was "disgusting" it was at this time that it was not as he said, his "second home" but in fact a youth hostel, with people arriving. My wife went into the kitchen to see if she could help get the meals out faster but she was quickly shooed out of the kitchen. She did however see the kitchen and it was at this point that she came out and told us that the kitchen was "gross" and was that he didn't want any of us to see how unclean it was. There was a lot more, but at this point the two large groups (us and the German women) both arrived at the same conclusion which was this was a disorganized disaster and we all decided to leave. Several of the women felt unsafe and since this was far from what was advertised, we decided to leave. My take was given how long he was taking, the unclean conditions, the mosquitoes, no lights in the back yard zero communications from our host, we needed to take control. As a side note, I'm the President of two successful Oregon wineries. I fully understand the importance of hospitality and guest experience. My take was that our host failed to manage expectations with our group and that he was in no way prepared to serve seventeen people by himself. It felt like this was a money grab on his part and hoped we wouldn't complain. Based on this experience, I would hope that we could get a refund. D
      Rudy was great

Rudy was great, lots of info and good food and was knowledgeable about lot of different stuff, thanks!
RUN - do not book this!
      Patricia_F, May 2024
We were totally misled. He did not take us to restaurants. He said there were too many of us (was it our fault they overbooked?). So he took us on a subway to a mosquito-infested backyard in a questionable neighborhood, where he planned to feed 17 of us some “bites.” He was the only person preparing and serving 17 people. He brought out two bottles of wine for all of us to share over 5 courses. We were 3 different groups from Germany and the US. We all stayed for the first course, then left. We are seeking refunds.
      Not as advertised
      Doug_B, May 2024
unfortunately, the evening was not as advertised nor expected. We traveled by public transportation to a “garden” setting. We were immediately tormented by mosquitoes. The overall atmosphere and setting left much to be desired and we were uncertain of the facility cleanliness. We left shortly after being served a cold cherry soup which was actually very good. Our host was very pleasant and had gone out of his way to prepare a nice meal for us. Of course he was very disappointed when we left early, but it just was not as advertised.
      Response from Host, May 2024
"We left shortly after being served a cold cherry soup which was actually very good." WE THINK THIS SENTENCE SAYS MORE THEN ANYTING. We've prepared a 7 course dinner with the most iconic Budapest street foods, bar foods and some restaurant dishes, and you came there, tried the first dish, found it amazing, and then LEFT in a disrespectful way. We did our best approach, to try to show you the authentic Hungarian gastro experience, but you stood up and left without asking a question, trying to cooperate or showing any kind of respect - I'm repeating - after the first dish, which you found very good. Where's the logic? One more thing to not to have a misundestanding: The sour cherry soup has to be served cold ... "and we were uncertain of the facility cleanliness." Based on what? No one have entered or seen our kitchen. This is exactly the distrust I was talking about. Luckily we made some documentation so you can also see yourself: The only dish we managed to served, luckily everyone can see that it looked good: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/9198/GBehUj.jpg (Thank you for confirming at least that it was good) The same host doing a cooking class of the street food: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/1213/6QQenb.jpg Dinner party at the same location with 40 people participating: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/5020/uZ0opb.jpg Some dish we never got to serve you: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/8262/bRKdFw.jpg Preparations: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/1234/zErHoY.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/7822/e2pZkz.jpg The plates, which were 'cracked': https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/2205/22ovYt.jpg We are super sad.
Not at all what was promised.
      Kathy_B, May 2024
It was not a street food tour. We were told we were instead going to the Viator Budapest office back garden, which was actually the mosquito-infested backyard of a hostel in a suburb of Budapest. Cracked plates and bowls, on dirty plastic tables, paper towels for napkins, warm tap water and a kitchen and bathroom which were not at all clean. And one person who was supposed to cook, serve and talk about Budapest. There were 16 of us on the tour and we left after an hour. Had to get a cab to take us back to the city. Maybe this tour is usually great and it was a bad night but the operator said the change was Viator's fault that it was overbooked. Until they figure out how to manage reservations, expectations and cleanliness I would not suggest booking.
      Response from Host, May 2024
Dear Kathy, There are several misunderstandings and even incorrect informations in your text, which absolutely saddens us. It is definitely a situation which will makes us analyze how things went wrong, but we are still confident about saying we were doing the right thing with our best approach, best will and honesty. 99% of the cases we receive 5 stars and this time, with a difficult group dynamics, it did not work out, which hurts us a lot as well. We are not used to see someone not satisfied, in fact, it kind of, almost never happens, we always work until someone is 150% satisfied. But you did not trust us and our program was abolished. First I'm going to write down our opinion and after I'm going to go point by point to talk about the (according to us) non-factual informations you were mentioning. Our company is called Living Local Hungary, we have many years of experience, a high reputation, and have done hundreds of tours with, like I said, mostly 5 star reviews. Most of our customers trusts us. In your case, it did not happen, we did not felt trust from you. We could analyze the reasons, and we will, but yes, the group dynamics, as it was two big groups, which arrived there already unsatisfied (one side was not satisfied with their cruise trip, the other side was complaining about previous food experiences at the first minute as introduction) So our tour guide felt uncomfortable from the first minute and did not feel treated as a 100% equal partner by part of the customers which is usually not the case. But we tried to fix it, as we have 15 years experience on Tourism field, and as it is our job. Living Local Hungary, as the name says, offers the authentic experience. This day, we decided to make an exclusive Garden-food party for you, as it is our tradition on the 1st of May. Instead of serving you 5 street food dishes we've set up a whole dinner for you for at least double of the value, and we brought you to the District 11 (which is one of the high-end districts) and we've welcomed you in a Garden of a Villa which serves as a Guesthouse. The Food was prepared by a chef, our company has a long experience in hosting numerous dinner party events in the past (up to 40 people), and the same person which was there, was also hosting cooking classes about the most famous street food dishes since several years trough Viator as well, which he was supposed to prepare for your group as well. Luckily we have some documentation, including on the food served to you, where everyone can see the food looked good and the plates were not cracked: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/9198/GBehUj.jpg The same person hosting cooking class of the street food: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/1213/6QQenb.jpg Dinner party at the same location with 40 people participating: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/5020/uZ0opb.jpg The event instead of giving you 5 street food was planned to offer 7 different dishes, prepared by a licenced chef, except for 1, which was ordered directly from our partner-restaurant, and included the most iconic Budapest street foods, some barfood and some restaurant dishes as well. It kind of shocks us seeing you describing everything so negatively without even giving the chance to our company by the time we met. 3 people have spent more then 12 hours for preparation (shopping, preparation, organizing, pre-cooking). The plates were not cracked as they were bought in the IKEA just they day before as it can be seen on the picture too. We don't understand why serving a paper towel was not acceptable? The only thing we can admit, that there were mosquitos, but as we mentioned, we've hosted plenty of dinner parties there, another picture I add: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/4919/B07TTx.jpg So we did not think the mosquitoes were a problem, of course after your case, we now understand, that it can be. It is though a green area, where mosquitos can occur. As an extra, next to the food we did offer you local wine and homemade Pálinka as well. So we are totally saddened for all the story, that it did worked out the way as it did. We were ready to serve you 7 amazing dishes, but you stood up after the 1st one, and left without asking, listening, cooperating and discussing. Let's go point by point also about things being said: 1) We never told you we would go to Viator office. We are not Viator. We said we would go to our company's guesthouse. Our company is Living Local Hungary and not Viator. It was clearly said. You misunderstood. 2) Like we said previously, the plates and bowls were bought just the day before in Ikea. They were not cracked at all... This is just not true. 3) 'Dirty plastic tables' They are normal Garden tables. Some of them are plastic, some of them wood. We have a picture though about this as well: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/6354/lSOtvv.jpg 4) Paper towels as napkins. We don't understand what the problem was? It was a Garden Street Food party. 5) You have never been to our kitchen, so you cannot have an idea how did it looked like. Of course, it was clean and well prepared. The plates, which were cracked: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/2205/22ovYt.jpg Some dish we never got to serve you: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/8262/bRKdFw.jpg Preparations: https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/1234/zErHoY.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/7822/e2pZkz.jpg 6) We never said the tour was overbooked. We never said it was Viator's fault. What we said, that we never had 16 people joining individually as 2 smaller groups, we always had them applying as 1 large group and in this regard we did handle groups up to 40. And we've said it was 1st of May, so waiting times everywhere for food would be long, but luckily we've set up our usual Garden party. We are sad! One more thing we would like to mention: Maybe the program you booked, was not the one fitting you
      Perfect!
