Overview

What To Expect

Take in the city views from Mt Cavendish after a 10-minute scenic ride aboard the Christchurch Gondola. (Frequent shuttle bus service (own expense) will take you from the city center to the gondola base station.) As you ascend to the Port Hills crater summit, enjoy a panoramic vista of Lyttelton Harbour all the way to the snowcapped Southern Alps and Canterbury Plains. When you reach the top, watch a video about the geologic and human history of Christchurch at the Time Tunnel.

Gondola Ride and Botanic GardensTour the Christchurch Botanic Gardens aboard the electric caterpillar shuttle, hopping on and off as you please to stroll through the rose garden, visit the tropical greenhouse and more. Knowledgeable garden staff are on hand to answer any questions you have.

Gondola Ride and Avon River PuntingGlide along the Avon River in a punt as a punter, traditionally dressed in straw hat and blazer, propels the flat-bottomed boat past the Christchurch Botanic Gardens as well as boat sheds, tree-lined banks and riverside paths. Blankets and umbrellas are provided to enhance the romantic setting.

It was nice way to see the city. Unfortunately the mountains were overcast so I couldn't get a great view of them. Otherwise it's a great way to get an overview of the city. Would recommend it for anyone travelling to Christchurch.

Wonderful view and a great experience. Definitely worth the admission ticket. Take the free bus from the cruise line from the dock into town and then pick up the local bus ($20 NZ for all day pass) to the gondola. Afterwards we took the bus into Christchurch and walked around. Took the bus back to town and then the free shuttle back to the ship. Great day, low stress.

Although it was a busy day with the cruise ship we had a great time. Only 30mins in the line It was a beautiful day, the view was amazing!

Most memorable part of the experience was the quiet ride to the summit and the beautiful panoramic view of Christchurch below. The multilevel viewing deck was a nice surprise and gave us an additional panoramic view of Littleton Harbor. Sheep grazing at the summit was also a nice surprise.

Views from the top of the mountain were spectacular. A couple of comments on the actual tour. It was unclear how we get to the gondola. We ended up having to pay for a bus to get downtown went after the fact, we found there was a bus that actually Would take us up to the gondola. The line in the gondola was very long, and they were allowing two people to go up in the four person gondola rather than encouraging people to grow up together. I understand people may be concerned with Covid, but it made the weight much longer than need be. Once at the top, the wait was worth the views.

The view going up in the gondola, and getting to the top was fabulous. There was also a discovery ride inside the building, that gave us information on the development of the area.

The ride itself was nice and comfortable, all the staff lovely and helpful. The visibility on top was zero and did not get better over the 2 hours I spent there so I cannot comment on that part of the trio, unfortunately.

The lift operators were helpful, the food good, the view great. I especially liked the educational panels on the walls and, in the case of the navigation by stars information, the ceiling. I like combining enjoyment of nature with learning of history.
