Overview

What To Expect

A must-do for foodies! Get caught up in the sensory overload of Marrakech as you wander its most famous square with a guide who'll help you find the hidden gems amid the madness. Sample fascinating local specialties before finishing the evening with a delicious traditional dinner.

Start your Moroccan culinary adventure when you meet your knowledgeable guide at Djemaa El Fna, the main square of Marrakech’s medina, in the early evening.

Hear a lowdown of what’s ahead and take time to absorb the dizzying square — declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001. In the evenings, Djemaa El Fna takes on a livelier persona as it fills with prettily lit hot food stands and crowds who come here for their nightly strolls and snacks.

Wander around the square, and then explore some of the side streets to discover food stops often missed by visitors. Try some of the wares on offer, including nuts, olives and other specialities, and continue to a poultry and beef market to watch the locals barter for meat. Haggling is integral to Moroccan life and seeing the deals being made provides a fascinating insight into local culture.

Delve into a spice market as your guide recounts how Morocco was an important spice-trading center, and view the rainbow-colored products such as saffron, paprika, cardamon, anise and turmeric. Learn how they’re used to enliven tagines and other staples, and stroll on to a bustling souk.

Pause to sample typical Moroccan breads such as msemen and beghrir — fluffy Berber pancakes — and if you wish, try more challenging delicacies such as sheep’s head, cow’s hoof or snail soup, known as ghoulal.  Lastly, visit a restaurant on Djemma El Fna just as the evening reaches its height. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan meal with your group as you take in the square with its peddlers, snake charmers and entertainers.

Your 3.5-hour food tour ends after your meal. Leave your guide and either return to your hotel or continue your evening out independently.

A conservative dress code is recommended in Morocco. Men and women should keep their upper body (especially shoulders, chest and midriff) as well as their knees covered at all times as a sign of respect to the local culture. Wearing shorts is not recommended. It can get cool after dark so please dress appropriately for this tour.

Fantastic!

Amazing experience, Yousif our guide was fantastic! Great value for the money, we had a whole evening discovering the souks and Medina, Yousif was very passionate about Marrakech and so friendly, was great to have him as we really got to interact with the locals and try their culinary delights. Food might not be to everyone’s taste but it’s worth a try. If you are going to Marrakech book this tour… you won’t get lost with your guide, as the medina is crazy busy.

Ibrahim was our guide and was very knowledgeable, pleasant and friendly. The tour was more than expected and excellent value for money. He showed us so much & plenty of tasting too! A great tour to do, ending in the square which punches your senses at night!

No "gastronomy" evident on this tour

The tour guide was not really interested in making this an enjoyable experience, he only engaged when asked questions and gave minimum reply. The food locations were very basic and a couple at least very unhygienic, we were matched with another couple and they were of the same opinion...I realise Marrkech is very diverse but this was certainly not " a gastronomic food tour " I have used viator many times before for excursions etc abroad, this was by far the worst.

Our guide Youseff was wonderful. This is a worthwhile adventure with a friendly and knowledgeable local food expert. We tried many different types of local food. Great explanations. You get deep into the souk. Highly recommended.

Atikka was a fabulous tour guide. Very knowledgable and so easy to follow when she explained the culture and life of Moroccan people. The food samples were great and a real close up experience of the Medina. Thoroughly recommend this

Because of the earthquake our guide (Youssef Rouissi) was limited to where he could take us. Most places were closed. Well, Youssef did a fantastic job. He showed us everywhere he could. We sampled all kinds of nuts, olives, pastries, teas and a lovely meal in square. I had some sheeps head and my partner had beef. Youssef was very interesting and knew so much about Marrakech. The way he told you the history of his country from today to centuries ago was enthralling. I could have stayed with Youssef for longer to hear what he had to say. This was a night I will never forget.

We had an amazing time with our guide, Chafik. He brought us to many local hidden gems and taught us about the history about different morrocan foods and the rich culture of the stalls in the souk. You’ll definitely taste some things you wouldn’t get to otherwise and leave with a greater understanding of Marrakech life. We greatly appreciated Chafik taking us off the beaten path.

Yousef our guide was amazing. It went above and beyond in our tour. There was soo much food, a huge variety of types of food savoury and sweet throughout the Medina. Perfect way to start your time I'm Marrakesh as he also gives you interesting facts and background history of the area also. Our tour lasted well over an hour than advertised and we enjoyed every minute. Thank you Yousef. Highly recommend.

A great introduction to Marrakech

This tour is a must when visiting marrakech, we did it on our first night and it gave us a great overview of the medina and the square, along with fantastic food and good company. We had Issam as our guide who was lovely and gave us lots of information about not only the food but marrakech as a city. There is plenty of food so make sure you are hungry before starting! Would highly recommend this tour, great value for money too!
