What To Expect

Kick off your morning tour with a cup of award-winning, organic coffee from Veracruz at Cafe Triana, located inside the lively San Juan Mercado de Especialidades (San Juan Market).

Your guide then leads you into the labyrinth of stalls that make up San Juan Market. The stalls you visit have been carefully chosen to give you with an array of Mexican cuisine, a UNESCO World Heritage since 2010. Chat with stall owners and listen to how they prepare their specialties from scratch.

The San Juan Market is known for its unusual foods. Sample grasshopper, Mexican crackling, river shrimp and the edible flower, and return to familiar ground with gourmet cheeses. You’ll see exotic delicacies piled on counters row after row — imported crocodile, wild boar, quail, and creatures of the sea, including freshwater gar, eel and stingray.

Next, walk over to Mercado de Artesanías La Ciudadela (Artisan Market), boasting the city’s largest selection of wares.

Discover exquisite handcrafted goods from all over Mexico, including lacquered trays from Olinalá, Talavera pottery, silverware, leather belts, tile-encased mirrors, guitars, rugs and papier-mâché skeletons. Meet artisans and traders from select booths, and hear about their backgrounds and artisanal craftsmanship.

Your all-in-one culinary and cultural tour complete, take the afternoon to further explore the food and market stalls recommended by your guide.

The tour guide was very unprofessional...
Andrew D, Jun 2017
The tour guide was very unprofessional. Not only that she was late, she was on her smart phone text messaging all the time. Her knowledge of the subject was very rudimentary and willingness to show us the markets close to 0. We had to force her to go to the meat section of the market. It made her unhappy. We only had stopped at two stands one with cheese and the other with exotic food grasshoppers. Than we went for few tacos of barbacoa pulled pig and one old corn muffin. Finally she dropped was at the artisan market 100 meters away saying goodbye. No explanation, no introduction, no guidance. The scheduled at least 3 hours tour was cut to less than 2 hours. With her limited command of English and attention to in and out-going text messages I wonder if this could be a blessing. For everybody thinking to pay 60 per head for this tour simple advice. This is rip-off. Do it on your own for 10 and will see more, enjoy it better. All owners of the stands are very pleasant and will help you to taste and give explanation up to their best potential paying undivided attention to the client.

Food tour was good and informative. Your instructions said to be there 15 minutes early, but our guide was 5 minutes late. Then why be early? Overall we had a good time and enjoyed it.

The tour itself was excellent. I enjoyed talking to the people in the market and eating foods i had not eaten before. The market is beautiful and very clean and all of the vendors are friendly and happy to talk to you. My guide was friendly, fairly knowledgeable and did a good job. The price for the tour, however, is completely unjustified. 58 for 2 hours walking through the market compared with, for example 76 for 12 hour trip to Puebla just doesnt make sense. If you speak Spanish you could have the same experience four about 15 to 20 for the food.
