What To Expect

Your day starts with morning pickup at your hotel or the airport and transfer by private air-conditioned vehicle to the Gateway of India and harbor.

There, board the ferry for the ride to Elephanta Island, home to the World Heritage-listed Elephanta Caves. The ancient cave temples date to the fifth century, carved with stunning reliefs and statues that honor the Hindu god Shiva.

After touring the cave temples, return by ferry and start your city tour at the Gateway of India, a colonial-era monument that dates to 1924 and overlooks the harbor. Purchase lunch at a local restaurant, then drive to several landmarks in Mumbai.

Take in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus), a historic railway station in Mumbai and UNESCO World Heritage Site; Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai (Crawford Market), a venerable wholesale market; then take in the scenic coastline along Marine Drive, which runs next to the Arabian Sea from Nariman Point to Girgaum Chowpatty and on to Malabar Hill.

Take in panoramic views of South Mumbai from the Hanging Gardens (Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens) on Malabar Hill, then stop at the Mani Bhawan (Gandhi Museum), a Gujarati-style residence that served as the headquarters for Mahatma Gandhi's organizing.

Next, get great photo ops of Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, the largest unmechanized laundry facility in the world. Finally, pop by the Prince of Wales Museum (closed Mondays) before ending your tour with hotel drop-off.

Sub and our driver awesome!! They informed us just enough and kept us safe.suba was our guide. She is a force of nature in taking control and getting things done. Our driver kept us on schedule and safe in the crazy mumbai traffic. Wau better than a cruise ship tour.

Our thoughts on Mumbai

India is a third world country so industrial smog is the norm here. Visibility is down to a few miles/Klm so views of the city are close up. We met the Guide at the gates to the Port and travelled in a lovely air-condition car to see the spice markets, washing sect industry, parks and historical buildings from the British, Portuguese and even the Mongal era. One has to get used to the sea of humanity and the open rubbish dumps. But if you can see past that you get a sense of what it could be in a few years. Our guide steered us through a throng of people traveling to Elefanta Island. Still don't know how he managed that. We took a ferry ride about an hour to get there which was nice. Word of warning here! Go to toilet before you go as you will not like what you find on the island. One needs to start training for a marathon for this treck it is not for the faint hearted. Cute train ride to the base of the mountain. Then 130 steps to the cave. Was it worth it? I would say yes if you are fit enough. We had an excellent guide who protected us when needed and was full of information. Our driver was amazingly skillful in traffic and always appeared when and where we needed him. Happy to recommended both

Naina was an excellent guide! She thoroughly explained the intricate carvings of the Elephanta Caves, and the story of Shiva . We had an excellent lunch at an established Mumbai restaurant, and she took us through the market and a lovely shop in our quest to complete our India souvenier shopping. Naina is very knowledgeable and friendly and her english is excellent. We highly recommend Naina and this tour!

Elephanta caves and Mumbai tour really came alive for us due to the Knowledge of, Naina Shah, our guide for the day. Naina’s knowledge which she readily shared was incredible, from the history of the carvings in the Hindu Temples, to the attractions in and around Mumbai. Without Naina we would not have seen, or understood all that is central to Mumbai and its history. A long day but well worth the experience!
