What To Expect

Make your way to Old Harbour in Reykjavík, where you'll present this voucher for a bird watching tour. This tour is operated during the best months for spotting birds near Reykjavík, from May 15th to August 20th, and there are up to four departures each day. You’ll travel in a custom RIB boat—the Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boats are the gold standard for fast trips on Faxaflói Bay, as the captain can shut off the engine in order to silently approach birds and wildlife.

Watch for some of the 30,000 puffins that nest off the coast of Reykjavík, along with the flightless great auk, and gannets, the largest seabird in the North Atlantic. Throughout the tour, the guide and captain will share facts and stories about Iceland’s puffins, Faxaflói Bay, and any wildlife you spot along the way. This tour concludes back at the Old Harbor, close to the city’s attractions, restaurants, and sights.

Our tour was at 9am and the view was pristine. I’d definitely recommend this tour. I’m including some other information that may be helpful so here goes. There is free parking in a gravel lot west of the office on the harbor side (see photo) The seats on the boat are extremely comfortable and designed to absorb any bounce. We forgot our gloves but the company had a box of extra gloves and beanies that saved us. Arrive 30 min early to sign a waiver and get changed into the overalls and life jacket. I left my purse in the office and it was safe. I wish I had a better camera then my phone. The boat gets very close to the puffins and there were hundreds of them which could be a result of the time of day/year. June 16 9am. It was definitely worth it and very comfortable even when a little rain squall came through.

Puffins galore

We had an amazing time with Mr. Puffin crew and their marine biologist, Eileen.We got suited at their establishment with protective overalls and life jackets. Then boarded one of two comfortable speedboats they had docked and headed out to two separate locations where puffins come to breed. We saw seagulls, cormorants and even a sea Lion.Then we reached an islet full of puffins in all stages: flying, nesting, fishing for food and just being goofy! They are simply too adorable and beautiful to watch. If you want to see puffins up close in their own environment; THIS is your tour. Amazing experience.

It was a really enjoyable trip, guide was knowledgable and we stopped near to two islands to see puffins. Very cute and pretty birds. Disclosure: the pictures were taken with a 40x zoom point and shoot camera. So in reality, you wont get to see the puffins this close, but with this tour you can be as close as you can get to the island.

Quick way to see the puffins from Reykjavik

It was a quick way to see the puffin colony from Reykjavik. In addition to puffins, we saw other sea birds like the fulmars, cormorants, eiders. Our guide Miquel is knowledgeable. He gave us a lot of information while pointing out the different bird species. The only thing is that the puffins are small and the boat can has to maintain a safe distance from the islands. In case you do not have high power camera lens, Miquel took some photos and shared with everyone on the tour.

A short, but very enjoyable excursion. Check in was easy and cupboards are provided to leave bags. The staff help kit you out in a warm dry suit and binoculars are provided. A naturalist accompanied the tour. She was very knowledgeable about Puffins and the other birds we saw. We saw a lot of Puffins. On the water, in the air and on land. It is tricky to get pictures of the Puffins! On the way back we had a short sight seeing tour of Reykjavik from the water. After the tour the company shared the photos that the naturalist took during the tour.

The tour was fun from beginning to end, from putting on our overalls to bouncing over waves, to viewing the hundreds of puffins and some other interesting sea birds. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining, and the seating was quite comfortable. I had wanted to do this for years, and finally did, on my 76th birthday!

Our Captain and our naturalist/marine biologist were wonderful. She was so knowledgeable about all the sea birds, and was always on the lookout for the next wondrous sight to point out to us. Our captain maneuvered our boat expertly to provide us the best viewing, and photo opportunities. Very comfortable in the overalls and the boat was awesome for mobility and viewing. DO IT!!!

Puffins Everywhere

After squeezing into a thick, hot water survival jumpsuit, we boarded the rib boat. You kind of stand with your butt on the seat, holding onto the back of the seat in front of you. The puffins are on two islands just outside the harbor, literally 7 minutes away. We saw tons of puffins both on the islands and in the water. Plus our guide and our skipper showed us other birds. The hour went by very quickly. Glad we did the trip.

A good trip

I like this trip. I saw lots of puffins. Travelling in a rib boat is a new experience to me. I like it. I recommend others to choose travel in a rib boat rather than in a normal boat.
