What To Expect

Immerse yourself in the fascinating history and architecture of Bali’s Karangasem kingdo as you visit some of its most important shrines and palaces on this 8-hour day trip. This full-day experience is a great way to discover a different side to this culturally and historically unique island.

Start your trip with pickup from select hotels at 9am. Please note that pickups may commence between 30 to 60 minutes before this time. Your tour operator will confirm the schedule at the time of reconfirmation. Head east into the lush countryside of Bali as you journey to the Karagasem Palace for your first stop. This 19th century site, also known as Puri Agung Karangasem, was built by the region’s first king Anak Agung Gede Ketlantik. His efforts showcase a unique blend of Chinese, Balinese and European architecture. Before departing the palace, your guide will explain the kingdom’s historical relations with the Dutch.

Continue next to Sukasada Park, a Karangasem Empire heritage building set in the center of a large fishpond. Make sure to note the building’s architecture, which reflects a blend of a number of cultures, with strong European influences. It was often used by Karangasem’s king for relaxation and to host meetings with key dignitaries and guests. Within the structure you’ll find a range of artifacts like photos of the royal family, plus furniture and variety of other objects.

Take in one last view of the picturesque building and its ponds, set against the backdrop of soaring Mt. Agung in the distance, before heading to Sebetan village, a township known for its cultivation of salak (snake fruit), a fruit known for its scaly, reddish-brown skin. Enjoy a walk down the rustic streets of the area, admiring fantastic views of the nearby mountains, palm trees and blue ocean in your field of view.

Make a stop for lunch at a local eatery serving a variety of Indonesian fare (at your own expense), then head to the water palace of Tirta Gangga. This unique palace, constructed by the Karangasem king Anak in 1948, consists of a series of intricate water statues of mythical creatures, most of which flow into bathing pools below. Snap a few photos among the unique setting of this palace’s idyllic gardens before heading back for drop-off at your Bali hotel.

It was quite a long drive from our Bali hotel but it was worth it. This tour is recommended for you to absorb the royal historical part of Bali. My husband and I were the only people on the trip that day so we had the tour guide all to ourselves. He was very friendly, knowledgable and helpful. Along the way to our first destination, we stopped at a nice place which sells souvenirs and have clean toilets. The Tirta Gangga Water Palace is a lovely place with natural spring water fountains and swimming pool. The Karangasem palace and its water palace is also quite a nice historical site to visit. We just passed by the Sebetan Village as the fruits are not much in season. The return journey was a long winding route. A day well spent in Bali.

What we loved: visiting Sukasada Park and Tirta Gangga Water Palace. These two places made the trip for us as they are both utterly beautiful and well worth seeing - we also had the best nasi goring we ever had at a café outside the Water Palace! Unfortunately there wasn't much to see at Puri Agung Karangasem, it was like a smaller less impressive version of the other two, and our guide only gave us a very basic history. I also don't think we really saw much of any picturesque villages, though we did stop to take in a great view. Before all of this we were taken around a silverworks, wood carving, batik processing and art gallery. The silverworks was briefly interesting before we were taken to the shop largest in Bali, no cheaper than UK. The wood carving was actually just a large shop, no process to show. The batik was a 5min brief overview before we were taken to the shop, and even more brief with the gallery. Appreciate they need the business, but being rushed through or not getting the interesting part to be followed around the shop was not great. Unfortunately our guide didn't give much information about the history of Bali, and even wanted to rush us through Sukasada Park. We tried to get more detail from him, but his English wasn't great and he didn't seem too interested we got more from the leaflets and activity description!. We would recommend the trip, but actually if you can visit those two places separately you might be better off. Having said that, a decent guide would have made all the difference.

The places we went were nice but our tour guide couldn't speak English so we read about the history of the places we saw on the internet, in the evening because the tour guide gave almost no info. He was pushing us to do shopping, he was snoozing in the car, playing on his mobile phone...

Very informative and friendly guide. The driver was very professional and the vehicle was well maintained and comfortable (good air conditioning!!) only downside was there was a lot of road works which meant there was a lot of time in the car. Overall a good little tour

Peaceful and tranquil as not on the tourist trail and therefore not thronging with tourists and hawkers. Transport could have been more comfortable but as we were the only ones on this tour we were able to spread out. However some of the roads desperately need maintenance and I felt each bump in my back The venue for lunch was stunning but the food was ordinary and overpriced
