All about Kuta

When to visit

Bali’s weather is balmiest and Kuta’s surf rolls in with metronome precision for the island’s dry season (roughly mid-April to mid-October). The European summer vacation and Australian winter vacation bring heavy traffic and high prices June–August, so May, September, and early October are better choices to skip the crowds. Avoid late November and early December, when newly minted Australian high school graduates descend en masse for Schoolies, a turbo-charged spring break.

Getting around

Bali has very little organized public transit, and narrow lanes, 1-way systems, and erratic riders make driving in Kuta hell on wheels. Most travelers get around with car charters, metered taxis (Bluebird is trustworthy), or rideshares: Grab and GoJek have both 2-wheel and 4-wheel rides available. Kuta is no place to learn to ride a motorbike—only rent one if you’re legally licensed in your home country, have the right International Driving Permit, and are covered by comprehensive insurance.

Traveler tips

Watching the sunset is a Bali rite of passage, and rooftop bars are a great way to savor a thermonuclear Indian Ocean sunset with a glass of something cold. More upscale than most Kuta venues, though still affordable by most Western standards, Kuta Social Club is a sleek rooftop club with an Instagrammable infinity pool, a Mediterranean menu, and a healthy selection of drinks.

A local’s pocket guide to Kuta

Author Theodora Sutcliffe in black.
Theodora Sutcliffe

A freelance writer, Theodora has been based in Bali, on and off, for almost a decade and writes regularly about it and other Indonesian islands.

The first thing you should do in Kuta is...

install the Gojek ridesharing app. There’s hardly any public transport on Bali, and Uber doesn’t work here.

A perfect Saturday in Kuta...

starts on the beach, likely includes some retail therapy—both Beachwalk and Discovery are great for shopping—and wraps up with sunset drinks and a rowdy night on the town.

One touristy thing that lives up to the hype is...

Waterbom! Waterbom Bali is one of Asia’s top water parks, and offers everything from kiddie slides for the littlies through to a 360-degree full loop.

To discover the "real" Kuta...

Nobody comes to Kuta for authenticity. But tourists have been falling in love with Kuta Beach for generations, and a surf session is a great way to recapture that vibe and meet some locals too.

For the best view of the area...

head to a rooftop bar such as The Seven to watch a spectacular Indian Ocean sunset.

One thing people get wrong...

if you’re buying from beach vendors or arranging a massage from the massage ladies, always negotiate. But don’t try and beat them down crazy low: an extra dollar here or there will mean more to them than it does to you.
