Kuta trip ideas
One of Bali’s most lively tourist spots, Kuta is also the Indonesian island’s best-known surf destination that’s home to scenic Sunset Beach, street food stalls galore, and plenty of nightlife options along Jalan Legian road. A popular stop-off for first-time visitors to the island—as well as partiers and backpackers—there are plenty of things to do in Kuta, from fishing and surfing to spa days and golf experiences.
Bali’s weather is balmiest and Kuta’s surf rolls in with metronome precision for the island’s dry season (roughly mid-April to mid-October). The European summer vacation and Australian winter vacation bring heavy traffic and high prices June–August, so May, September, and early October are better choices to skip the crowds. Avoid late November and early December, when newly minted Australian high school graduates descend en masse for Schoolies, a turbo-charged spring break.
Bali has very little organized public transit, and narrow lanes, 1-way systems, and erratic riders make driving in Kuta hell on wheels. Most travelers get around with car charters, metered taxis (Bluebird is trustworthy), or rideshares: Grab and GoJek have both 2-wheel and 4-wheel rides available. Kuta is no place to learn to ride a motorbike—only rent one if you’re legally licensed in your home country, have the right International Driving Permit, and are covered by comprehensive insurance.
Watching the sunset is a Bali rite of passage, and rooftop bars are a great way to savor a thermonuclear Indian Ocean sunset with a glass of something cold. More upscale than most Kuta venues, though still affordable by most Western standards, Kuta Social Club is a sleek rooftop club with an Instagrammable infinity pool, a Mediterranean menu, and a healthy selection of drinks.

install the Gojek ridesharing app. There’s hardly any public transport on Bali, and Uber doesn’t work here.
starts on the beach, likely includes some retail therapy—both Beachwalk and Discovery are great for shopping—and wraps up with sunset drinks and a rowdy night on the town.
Waterbom! Waterbom Bali is one of Asia’s top water parks, and offers everything from kiddie slides for the littlies through to a 360-degree full loop.
Nobody comes to Kuta for authenticity. But tourists have been falling in love with Kuta Beach for generations, and a surf session is a great way to recapture that vibe and meet some locals too.
head to a rooftop bar such as The Seven to watch a spectacular Indian Ocean sunset.
if you’re buying from beach vendors or arranging a massage from the massage ladies, always negotiate. But don’t try and beat them down crazy low: an extra dollar here or there will mean more to them than it does to you.
There are two beach destinations called Kuta in Indonesia: one on Bali and one on neighboring Lombok. Kuta Bali is very touristy but worth visiting if you like malls, water parks, family attractions, or surfing. Kuta Lombok has a spectacularly beautiful coastline and is popular with surfers.
...MoreKuta Bali was one of the first destinations to become popular with the surfers who brought tourism to the island in the 1970s, thanks to its sweeping beach and metronomic surf. Today, it’s best known for attractions like the Waterbom water park and malls like Beachwalk Shopping Center and Discovery Shopping Mall.
...MoreGet active on the water in the morning, either taking a surf lesson or hitting the Waterbom water park. After lunch, do some shopping at the malls or the art markets, grab a Balinese massage at a spa, then head out for sunset drinks followed by dinner and a club.
...MoreSeptember is a great month to visit Kuta Bali. It’s still the dry season, but the European summer tourist season and Australian winter tourist season are mainly over. That means both traffic conditions and accommodation prices are better than during the July–August peak, while the beach and attractions are less crowded.
...MoreSeminyak is better than Kuta, but generally more expensive. Seminyak has a wide range of accommodations, and the stores, bars, nightclubs, and restaurants are generally higher class than Kuta. Kuta is a popular package tour destination that’s also good for families. Legian, between Kuta and Seminyak, can make a good compromise.
...MoreTaxi fares vary widely on Bali, and Kuta and Seminyak are large areas. A ride from Kuta to Seminyak can cost anything from 30,000 IDR (under $2) on local rideshare apps like Grab and Gojek to 100,000 IDR (roughly $6.50) from a street taxi. Bluebird is the most affordably priced metered taxi.
