Each of the Homomonument’s triangles point to a symbolic location. One points to the National War Memorial on Dam Square, another towards the house of Anne Frank, and the third to the headquarters of the COC Nederland—the Dutch gay rights group and oldest continuously operating LGBTQ organization in the world.
The Homomonument makes an interesting stop on the way to the Anne Frank House or as part of an LGBTQ history tour of Amsterdam. Although it is easy to miss, the pink triangle monument is an important tribute to the LBGTQ men and women persecuted throughout the years.
The Homomonument is found along the banks of the Keizersgracht Canal—right next to the Westerkerk Church and just a few minutes walk from the Anne Frank House. From Amsterdam Central Station, take tram 17 and the Homomonument is just a short walk from the Westermarkt stop.
Since the Homomonument is located alongside a public street and canal, the monument is always open. On Remembrance Day (May 4th), wreaths are placed on the memorial to honor LGBTQ victims of persecution. On Dutch Liberation Day (May 5th), the monument becomes the site of a lively street festival.
Located next to the Homomonument is Amsterdam’s official LGBTQ information kiosk, Pink Point. Staffed by friendly volunteers, the kiosk provides information on the Homomonument as well as a wide range of information on LGBT life in Amsterdam. Pink Point has one of the best selections of LGBTQ gifts and souvenirs in Holland.
