3 Days in Amsterdam for Foodies
One of my fondest Amsterdam memories is of sitting at the edge of the water in Noord-Amsterdam with a huge flaky pastry and a coffee I’d bought from Monk Bouldergym (even the climbing walls have great cafés here). There are many parts of Amsterdam I’d call my favorite, but as a confirmed foodie, every visit is planned around the things I can consume while I’m there.
I’ve visited the city for beer festivals and wine tastings, holidays and birthday get-togethers, and every time I’ve left with one main thought in my head—those guys really know how to eat and drink. Here’s what I’d get up to on a three-day trip to Amsterdam.
One word: unpredictable. Bring a jacket, bring sunscreen. You might need both.
If you only have time for one thing, make it Winkel 43 for Dutch apple pie. Seriously.
Get to know Amsterdam’s trendiest neighborhood on a foodie tour around Jordaan. Taste local cheese and smoked sausages, bitterballen, and more as you learn about the history of this artsy area. Walk to Winkel 43 for the best apple pie in the city—and delicious sandwiches too.
Amsterdam is easy to get around, but it’s big, so do as the locals do and get on a bike. Cycling tours can give you insight into the city’s hidden gems, but you can also explore the many flavors of Amsterdam on a walking tour if preferred.
Traditional and craft beer meet in a beautiful way in Amsterdam, and there’s no better place to experience that than in a cozy traditional brown café like In De Wildeman. Of course, no beer in Amsterdam is complete without cheese, so taste them together on a tour, or hop on the Brew Bus and visit breweries and bars across town.
When evening rolls around, enjoy a trip to Noord-Amsterdam to visit Walhalla and Oedipus breweries—but if you’re all beered-out, there’s more to do here than drink. Pop over to FC Hyena for great food, cocktails, and a movie; Hotel de Goudfazant for high-class cooking with local ingredients; or Noorderlicht for bohemian, waterfront vibes in a giant greenhouse.
On your last day in Amsterdam, take to the canals and learn about the city from a brand new perspective. Some boat tours will include snacks and drinks, so choose well and you could include lunch in your travels. If you’d rather see the iconic windmills, take a trip to Zaanse Schans.
Tonight, enjoy a three-course dinner cruise set against Amsterdam’s skyline. The canals at night are incredibly romantic, glittering as they do with the reflection of the streetlamps. It’s a great way to say goodbye to this special city.
