The atmospheric Royal Mile thoroughfare cuts through the historic core of Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, extending for slightly more than a mile (1.6 kilometers) from Edinburgh Castle all the way to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Both sides of the partly pedestrianized street are bordered by historic granite buildings bearing shop display windows piled high with symbols of Scotland, from tartan to whisky to shortbread. In between the former tenements and taverns are darkened arm-width-wide alleyways, known locally as closes.

Quick review of some of the history of the Royal mile. Given that its more of a shopping district its easy to miss the smaller sites of interest. If you dont want to drone on with a tour group for a very crowded location than this is nice.

Nice little walk through the town and Castle. Nicky our guide was well educated and provided a host of unique stories surrounding the history of the area, culture and people. Would highly recommend.

Engaging and Entertaining
We thoroughly enjoyed Robert’s narrative of the early history of Scotland and in particular Edinburgh. Robert is very knowledgeable, funny and engaging throughout our 2-1/2 hour tour. We saw parts of Edinburgh aside from the Miracle Mile and concluded the tour at Grayfriar’s cemetery. There was not a dull moment and we highly recommend Robert and his private tour. Money well-spent!
