The basics

Seeing as the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow consists of more than 18 different branches, it's hard to conquer all of these on one trip; so, it’s best to make a shortlist and visit them over several days. Some travelers choose a multi-day, hop-on hop-off bus tour to explore dispersed attractions independently. Alternatively, it’s possible to visit multiple museums during Old Town and Kazimierz private walking tours or electric golf buggy tours.

Things to know before you go

  • It’s better to slow down and spend a day exploring the museums of Krakow’s three key culture areas: these are the Old Town, the former Jewish district of Kazimierz, and the former Ghetto area in Podgorze.

  • Each museum has different accessibility facilities, but the main headquarters—The Krzysztofory Palace—is wheelchair-accessible.

  • There’s a visitor center at Krzysztofory Palace, which is located in Krakow’s Old Town. Here you can find out about the suggested museum routes that help you tick off multiple museums in a day.

How to get there

Krakow is known for being a very walkable city, so you can reach a lot of the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow’s outposts on foot, without encountering too many busy roads. However, the city also has ample bus and tram lines that connect all of Krakow’s main neighborhoods—take tram lines #4, #8, #14, or bus numbers #124, #152, #424.

When to get there

Krakow is busiest during the summer months of July and August, so expect lines at some of its most popular museums and attractions. For warm weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting in May or September instead. Each museum has different opening hours, but in general, visiting earlier in the day, close to opening time is a good bet to avoid crowds.

Must-See Museums in Krakow

To see archaeological finds from excavations under the city, Rynek Underground Museum is a must. It offers reconstructions of medieval markets, holograms, and interactive displays. Oskar Schindler’s Factory Museum tells the story of the tragedies faced by the Jewish community in Nazi-occupied Krakow during World War II, while the neighboring MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art is an essential stop for modern art fans.
