What To Expect

Make your way to the Portuguese Synagogue in tin central Amsterdam, convenient to the metro line and other key attractions in the Jewish Cultural Quarter. Learn about the dramatic history of Amsterdam’s Jewish community, who arrived in the Netherlands fleeing persecution in Spain and Portugal.

Walk the sand-covered, wooden floors of the synagogue, which is lit by 1,000 candles set in brass chandeliers—the Portuguese Synagoge has never had electric light or heating. Continue through a series of buildings filled with collections of ceremonial objects in silver, gold, silk and brocade, then see the oldest working Jewish library in the world, Ets Haim, which is part of UNESCO’s ‘Memory of the World’ program.

Your ticket is valid for one month, and includes access to the Jewish Historical Museum that’s housed in four monumental synagogues, the JHM Children's Museum and all located within the 1-Jewish Cultural Quarter.

Fascinating to hear about the development of the Synagogue. Audio self-guided tour was wonderful. Staff was helpful in guiding us where to go so we didn't miss anything.

Nunca había visto una sinagoga tan grandiosa. Fue una visita muy interesante conocer aspectos de la religión judía que desconocía. Me impresionó mucho el monumento a los judíos deportados en la segunda guerra mundial.
