What To Expect

Travel south over the Bombay Hills to the fertile farmland of the Waikato region after morning pickup from your Auckland hotel. En route to Hobbiton, disembark the coach for a stretch break, and stop for morning tea (own expense) before arriving at the Hobbiton Movie Set, located in Matamata.

Your guide takes you through this working sheep farm, a prime filming location for "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" movie series' with incredible views overlooking the world’s biggest outdoor movie set. Explore the Shire, home to hobbit holes including Bilbo Baggins’s house. Stop for photos in front of the Mill, the Party Tree, and the double-arch bridge as you’re entertained with tales about the making of the films.

Then head to the Green Dragon Inn for a complimentary cider, ale, or ginger beer. After your tour of Hobbiton, enjoy an included lunch at the Party Marquee before your day trip ends with drop-off at your hotel in Auckland.

Great experience, highly recommend this tour. Pick up was quick and easy - thanks to the other guests for being on time - Coach was clean and comfortable. Driver gave great information about the country and landscape. Hobbiton was so, so cool to see! Paths are unpaved so wear comfy shoes. Can be muddy if it's rained recently. All guides were friendly and knowledgeable. Set design was amazing. Must do!

What a wonderful day! We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Hobbiton. Wouldn't have changed a thing. Knowledgeable guides, friendly driver and small group meant a great time!

This was a wonderful experience for a lifelong Tolkien fan...of the books and the films. Walking inside an actual Hobbit Hole was amazing! Visiting Hobbiton was both exciting and interesting, especially in terms of film-making. I had a great time. The only downside was the size of the groups. I booked what I thought would be a much smaller 'small group' tour, not understanding the small group applied to the travel van from Auckland, not the tour itself.

Beautiful day in Hobbiton and driver was excellent! He was very good about letting us know expectations before the trip. Made for a wonderful Easter holiday. The weather was perfect and Hobbiton is filled with beautiful scenery and so much attention to detail. You have to try the ginger beer at the Green Dragon!

So special to see Hobbiton in person. We loved going inside a Hobbit hole and the details were beautiful! The ale at Green Dragon in is great and the lunch is delicious - lots of choices. Damion, our guide from Bush and Beach, kept us entertained and informed on our drive to and from Hobbiton!

I booked this particular tour because it said small group. 40 people to me is not small! The paths are narrow so we couldn’t always get into a group to hear our guide. Having said that we were very impressed with Hobbiton itself. Our guide Robert from Manchester was very funny, entertaining and informative. Brilliant! The lunch was sumptuous with a fantastic variety. The highlight was the end of the tour. I won’t spoil it for future visitors but it was amazing!

Hobbiton was so awesome that I didn't want to leave at the end of the tour. Also, the lunch buffet was pretty nice, with everything from salad and meat to desserts section. Our guide/driver Peter was very helpful and friendly, too. It is a must-do in New Zealand, for sure!

We had a wonderful day visiting Hobbiton! Our tour and tour guide were great. We were picked up on time at our hotel and had a nice drive out to Hobbiton. The scenery was lovely and our guide narrated along the way. We had a short rest stop both ways. Hobbiton is a fun place with a great tour and an excellent lunch. Bush and Beach did a great job coordinating it all!

I would rate this 10 out of 5. Hobbiton is astounding and we did the full package with lunch, which was excellent! It is a long drive from Auckland -2 1/2 hours on the bus, but our driver Wayne entertained us the whole way there and back with anecdotes and jokes that made it really fun. Plus the countryside is gorgeous. Best tour ever!

Comfortable transportation. Our driver kept us entertained while traveling. The site is amazing - especially the fully completed hobbit home we went into. We were first to get food in the lunch buffet that is included in the tour.

A must for any Lord of the Rings fans. The actual Hobbiton (the Shire) set used in the LOTR movies has been well preserved here, thanks to the Alexander family who owns the farm. It was awesome to see and to actually be there. The attention to details and the continuous upkeep of the set made it so worthwhile. The buffet lunch at the Green Dragon was delicious. I would like to go back and take my children who are also LOTR fans.

Memorable trip! We are not big Hobbit fans, but this trip was great and very well organized. Even the lunch was good which is often not the case on tours like this. Our guide, Murray, could not have been better. I highly recommend this tour.
