What To Expect

Your day tour to the Hobbiton™ Movie Set begins with a handy pickup from select central Auckland hotels: if you’re not staying at one of the hotels, make your own way there to meet your guide and small group. Admire the views as you’re driven south to the rolling farmland of the Waikato region, to Matamata.

Enjoy a guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set, where parts of “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” movies were filmed. Learn about movie-making history as you tour the 12-acre (4.8-hectare) set that was once a working sheep farm. See the hobbit holes, have an included drink at the Green Dragon Inn, and take cute photos on the set.

The tour ends with a transfer back to Auckland—you should even make it back in time for dinner in the City of Sails.

There and back again to a 5-star tour experience. The entire tour stsrt to finish has been well designed and executed. Perfect amount of time. The amenities are very modern, good Cafe and plenty of bathrooms throughout rhe tour, always very accisble. The movie set is way bigger than I expected. It was designed for tourists from the rebuilding of rhe set for thr Hobbit movies. I expect this place to grow. It is very good.

Marvellous trip to magnificent Hobbiton! Although the road there is far (~2hours) it was a nice experience. The transfer bus was comfortable, clean and our tour Greg was entertaining us with interesting stories about New Zealand and Hobbiton. The Hobbiton itself was everything I imagined! The entire Hobbiton experience was really unforgetable. First of, a huge thank you to our very warm, friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating transport, Huzefa. Equally good at his job and actually did us a personal favor is Mike as our tour guide. The ride from pick up and drop off points were on time and were made very educational by Huzefa and Mike sharing really interesting and helpful trivia. The set itself is nothing short of magical. It feels real and surreal at the same time. You have to experience it yourself. Overall, we cannot recommend Cheeky Kiwi and the team behind The Hobbiton set enough.

Simon was absolutely fantastic. He kept us entertained the entire trip and made it very memorable. The tour of Hobbiton was much better than we expected. We did not realize how expansive the set was and we learned so many cool things such as they originally burned down the Green Dragon Inn and only about 4 seconds of it actually made it into the movie. They had completely torn down the entire set after LoTR and had to completely rebuild it for the Hobbit. It took over 2 years to build the set and filming lasted only about 12 days. It’s all so incredibly interesting. Highly recommend this tour, not just for fans, but for anyone who loves film. Also, now that you get to tour a fully furnished hobbit home, it’s a must! They let you interact with everything in the homes, sit in the chairs, the beds, the dining table, anywhere you want to snap a photo.
