What To Expect

Your day begins with a pick-up from your central Auckland hotel and a scenic drive to Waikato, stopping along the way to take photos of the beautiful New Zealand countryside.

On arrival, enjoy time to browse the Hobbiton Gift Shop or grab a bit to eat (own expense) at the Shire's Rest Café. Then, join a guided tour of the Hobbiton film set, restored to its appearance in the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' films.

Get the inside scoop on LOTR filming in New Zealand as you stroll around the village, and hear fun stories about the actors, props and on-set mishaps. Along the way, see memorable sights from the movies, like the Mill and the Double Arched Bridge, pose for photos peeking out of a Hobbit Hole, and enjoy a drink (included) at The Green Dragon Inn.

At the end of the tour, return to Auckland, where your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

We did the excursion from Auckland prior to going on a cruise. It was a long drive but worth it. I driver Paul was great. The experience was extremely professional well run and very timely. If you go I would definitely do it first thing in the morning so you have less people to photograph around. We actually had lunch prior to ours and the food was great at the cafe. The new Hobie holes are amazing.

This small group trip was just perfect. The ride to Hobbiton was smooth, with a quick stop for coffee and toilets. The tour itself was very informative and fun and we loved the organization to keep groups small and moving through the movie set. Enjoyed everything about it!

Second Time More Worthwhile

This is the second time in 2 years I have visited Hobbiton. I fell in love with it last year so I decided to visit it again and I was definitely not disappointed. 2 of the Hobbit homes are finally open to the public which makes it even more magical. They have only been open for less than 44 days so if you are a fan this is the time you need to visit. They allow you close to 20 minutes in the Hobbit home which is more than enough time to take photos and videos and another 2 hours visiting the hobbit homes outside. A trip to Auckland is not the same without a visit here. We also had a wonderful tour guide in David.

Wonderful tour, kind guide!! Would highly recommend, so the drive and tickets, it’s all taken care of for you. Everyone said we should have booked a tour with the lunch included, but got a quick breakfast at the cafe before the tour and the baked goods and simple breakfast were also great!!

A Magical Experience

This was such a magical experience!! The crew made it so! They were all so helpful, friendly, and informative. Our driver, Martin was awesome. And our tour guide at Hobbiton, Kaiya was amazing. Both were very knowledgeable and never rushed use Kaiya even took the time to take our pictures :)

I loved the experience and my grandkids loved the gifts and pictures I brought home!!

Seeing the Hobbit Homes was very interesting, the detail is amazing and hearing how they got the movie effects to work was very interesting as well. There is a lot of walking - I don't recommend for anyone with mobility issues. You are walking on dirt/gravel paths, with pretty significant up and down. My husband struggled a lot.

This tour Auckland and Beyond Limited does not deliver on the promise. It clearly states the tour is full-day guided, and I confirmed with Viator when booking. Apparently they were confused as well and agreed that the travel would be guided throughout. Imagine our disappointment when the only guiding took place at Hobbiton which was very nice by the way by their tour guide for about 2 hours. Our guide was nice but was not Informative, friendly and a professional guide, he barely spoke English and only spoke when we asked a question usually took 2-3 times for him to understand. This excursion is essentially a taxi ride for 4-5 hours of silence and a nice tour put on by the Hobbiton guides. The full tour costs 162 USD in total. The actual tour on the set costs 79 NZD about 55 USD, which was included, so we each paid 107 USD 214 in total for a taxi ride in silence. I tried discussing this with the manager to receive some credit for their deceptive advertising, but he insisted they delivered what they promised and would provide compensation. Pitty a new operator would behave this way, I would have liked to provide a good review.
