Overview

Birdwatching and native plant-finding on a private Hawaiian nature preserve? Talk about once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Picked up by your naturalist guide, you’ll hit the backroads of the Hakalau National Forest Reserve, where you’ll spend the whole day sighting Akepa, Apapane, Omao, happy-faced spiders, carnivorous caterpillars, and dozens more endemic species. If you want to see rare and beautiful birds and amazing forest, this trip is for you. Gary our guide did a fantastic job and went the extra mile to make sure each of us saw each species.

Walking in what remains of the ancient rain forests, seeing jewel-like birds darting between trees, observing the heroic efforts being made to preserve what we still have left - inspiring and fascinating. An extra benefit: our guide John was an excellent source of information and really bad jokes.

Garry is a great naturalist, while this is primarily a bird tour in a restricted Federal wildlife refuge, Garry also discussed the natural features of this area of the Big Island. Recommend this tour for birders, but, Garry is great with the novice as well. Highly recommend this tour.
