What To Expect
Your admission to Kuranda Koala Gardens introduces you to a variety of Australian animals, from freshwater crocodiles to kangaroos. See friendly wallabies, and get an up-close look at wombats, lazy and lovable creatures who aren’t often seen in the wild due to their shyness and burrowing habits. You also have the opportunity to see the rare Greater Bilby, the Northern Bettong, Mahogany Glider and more in the new ‘Nocturnal Wonders’ exhibit.
At the Koala Gardens, you’ll receive your ticket for Birdworld, so head there next to experience a huge flock of free-flying birds. Within walking distance of the Koala Gardens, Birdworld is home to large aviary that mimics a rainforest habitat, where more than 80 species of native birds, some rare, fly among the lush landscape and water features. See birds like parrots, lorikeets and bowerbirds, and look for cassowaries, rarely seen in the wild. You might also spot international visitors like South American macaws.

This tour was wonderful! Be advised that if you want to hold a koala, you need to schedule early. We were able to get the last spot to have a picture taken with the koala. as the tourist season approaches, I’m sure it will be more difficult to schedule those when you get there. We went into the bird exhibit which was very fun. Bird would come and sit on your shoulder. We did buy for a minimal amount some food for them, when took a little nibble on my finger and the first aid at the desk was great. We ate lunch at the restaurant and had the Barramundi was delicious. My husband and I both got it because they were out of the fish and chips. I was never so excited to find out that they were out of something because this was I’m sure far better. The only problem we had was that we took an Uber from Cairns and we’re not able to find an Uber to take us back. We were able to get a rideshare with the help of some amazing women at the visitor center. I would highly recommend this.
Cute, educational and fun

This is a lovely sanctuary which shows the best of Australia’s indigenous species. The Koala bears are just adorable!
Excellent experience, great fun.

we got to feed some of the animals. also got my picture taken holding a koala. the place is small enough so you can see everything in a short amount of time

Thanks for your very positive feedback Carol. That is one of the advantages of a compact attraction especially with visitors trying to pack a lot into a busy holiday schedule.
Go early and line up for photos early.

Loved being able to cuddle a koala and hold a python. The exhibits were good and lots to see.
Would advise to go to Birdworld earlier in the day, by the time we got there they had run out of food and we didn't get the same close up experience that we saw others have there that had been able to get food.
Great experience

The bird world was kinda sad. The birds have very little space to move around. We thought it would be little more open.
Fun!

Both parks were great! We truly enjoyed the birds the most. It was cool having the birds eat from your hands and sit on your shoulders!

We went when it was pouring down rain, but still a good experience. We got to feed the kangaroos which was daunting but they’re actually really friendly. Kuranda village also has lots of great things to see and do after.

Delighted to see your excellent feedback Beverly.
Birds and Koalas
Paradise699811, Nov 2019
The bird Sanctuary was splendid. There were birds of various species flying around in a wonderful free environment and tons of interaction with many of them. The koala area or zoo was limited.

The Koala Gardens is basically a tiny version of every other Australian zoo i.e., only a couple of each popular Aussie animal, nothing special or different there. It was underwhelming at best. Birdworld was neat but tiny, and they charged extra for a bag of food to feed the birds, which was ridiculous for what they charge to get in. It was about a 20 minute activity that they charged more than 20 for. Basically, it wasn't really worth the price, but it was something different and made for a couple cute photos.
